I remember seeing (somewhere) something very similar about Fred Phelps. And a couple of his (since disowned) children have similar claims of physical abuse.

I've had the impression for some time that fundamentalist Christians tend to be way too harsh with their kids (and I imagine a lot abuse their spouses as well). I have a preacher cousin who would become enraged if a child began crying during his sermons. Fundamentalist men seem to get a real ego boost from the Bible verses about women submitting to their husbands.

Considering how Phelps acts during his demonstrations, I'm not the least surprised he'd beat the snot out of his own kids. It's obvious he is a very violent (dare I say antisocial) personality.

You have to wonder what men like Dobson might have turned out to be given another childhood with other circumstances..if they weren't treated so brutally by their own parents. I read Hitler was constantly beaten and was ashamed of his own jewish heritage, Saddam Hussein was almost aborted by his mother when he was still in the womb and was mistreated by his step father . I remember seeing a picture of a younger Saddam Hussein as a boy in a documentary of his life, what struck me was I could actually see suffering in his eyes and a sense of sorrow.
