So I'm starting to think about moving out... and I don't know if I want a room mate or not, and if I do what should I look for in one? Any suggestions?

If you're in a position to be able to afford not having one, that might be for the best. I've had really good experiences with dorm-mates in college, as well as sharing an apartment with friends I already knew, but I've heard pretty much nothing but bad about roommates that you meet just to be roommates. (That said, other people may have more encouraging things to say; anecdotally, I haven't heard much good though).

The anecdotal evidence in my circle of friends about who makes a good roommate is that you either are very close to your roommate and do everything together or you have very little in common and hardly see each other. These experiences all concerned college roommates, who actually shared the room with you.

Apartment mates, who each have a bedroom and share the common areas like kitchen, bath and living room, probably have it easier. It is important from the beginning, though, to agree on upkeep and prompt payment of rent and shared utility bills. Roommates, like married people, often fall out first over financial matters and housekeeping tasks.

It might be better to start out alone if you can afford it and only get a roommate if you meet someone you think you can stand to live with. Privacy is an important issue, especially if either or both of you plan to bring sex partners home. And remember to play safely. (Hey, someone had to say it!)

If you want a roommate.... think about your friends.. look for someone that you would want to be friends with. :)

(alright, sorry, I'm still a sucky friend.. that's all I've got)
