Any of you here have a site on MySpace and/or Facebook? I've been thinking about it lately and although I don't have a lot of computer time lately...
Do you feel this is a worthwhile/positive way to be out, get the word out, spread the truth, get in touch with others and advance our struggle for equality? What is your experience (if any) doing this?
Thoughts??

I am pretty much not in favor of MySpace for myself, but I do have a Facebook account, mainly because it was a great way to stay in touch with my former students when I left the Unversity in August. That has occurred, but something interesting also happened. I found out that Equality Advocates of PA had a webpage there for membership, so I asked several of my friends on Facebook to join, and about 20 of my former students did join. I am now going to use that as a way to keep them posted about issues and to try to rally some support. Don't know if it will show itself in in-person action, but it is yet another way to reach out.....

I'm on facebook as well, Phillip Abbott. I actually started a Facebook group called "Yes, I'm Christian. Yes, I'm gay. No, I won't repent." It has a whole two members, but hey, that's a start!

Facebook all the way! It's how all the college kids keep in touch online. Well... at least some of us. :p
The thing to keep in mind is that when you make a facebook (or myspace) that you're creating a mediated image of yourself (in his case mediated through facebook), and this is true for other people. I still say you should get to know people in person so you can get to know them better, but I think a facebook is a good way to keep in touch with people.
I personally like to fill my profile (http://vanderbilt.facebook.com/profile.php?id=9432187) with information about the issues I support, what I'm involved in, where and who I stand for politically, and I even have a European gay news (Pink News) application right next to where people write on my "wall". As far as being a source of how to spread the word and inform other people, myspace and facebook offer some very interesting ways of doing that. You can join groups (pertaining to issues of choice) and engage in conversations. Obviously, you could serve as a virtual beacon of truth if you like.
That's actually an interesting thought to me. I know when I used myspace that I often went to the largest LGBT group (I support same-sex marriage... I believe was the name) in order to find out the latest GLBT news and converse with people about all things LGBT. I'm sure facebook is facilitating the same sort of opportunities for young people (or anyone for that matter) who is impressionable and looking for answers; I just don't have the same feel for facebook as to where one would go to search for answers (as I didn't have that need when I joined facebook), but I'm sure the same sort of phenomena in some sense happens on facebook as I experienced on myspace.
Does that all make sense?

I think any forum, social network site is a great way to get out there for people to see who you are. I always put my agendas wherever I am. On myspace its gay rights stuff, here animal rights stuff, im always looking to change some hearts and minds. It does work!

This is very helpful. I'll be putting some major thought into both of these avenues...hopefully I'm not TOO old to hop on board!:lol: I appreciate the info & advice. I agree, any avenue where we can be out and say our peace is worth checking into.

I'm kind of a private bunny...not sure I want my tail wagging out there in cyberspace. Just kidding.

Well, that's why facebook is so great. There are many layers of protection/privacy that you can control for the information that you CHOOSE to put online, so you don't have to reveal everything about yourself.

Well being out and loud is not for everyone. I am definitely the activist breed so I like to be loud about my opinions =)

I thought that before I started on Facebook, but it seems almost ageless now that I have been on there for bit. Jump right in.
Oh, and by the way Antony, you better keep up that tail waggin' in cyberspace! We need you around here........

I agree with that part.. with myspace you can put as little or as much information on your profile as you want, but then, once you do, ALL your friends can see it... and EVERYONE can see it if you're not sure to put your profile to private.
I discovered that with facebook you can make a 'limited profile' so that you select specific sections that people can see... it's nice. For that reason, I decided to only add online friends to facebook and not myspace from now on.. as much as I trust people here, the reality is, you can't be to careful... I give away to much information as it is on here probably, I don't need everyone to see myspace stuff on top of all that.
uhh... sorry for rambling... my facebook is,

I'm playing around with myspace right now. Haven't checked out Facebook yet. I did keep my city/state off my profile. I'm just learning the ropes, so all advice is appreciated!! Thanks for the tips! Don't have a ton of time to do computer stuff after work so it's sloooooowwwwwww going.
(Thanks Vanessa...I may be chronologically 'older' but I feel so young!!)

I have been on myspace for a couple of months now. However, things are still changing on my page. The URL is http://www.myspace.com/heckonwheels if you want to take a look.

After meeting you, Brian, I would like to say how appropriate "heckonwheels" is for a pseudonym - and I mean that in the most positive way imaginable.

heckonwheels is my handle on another message board. It's a very tight knit community. That is why the myspace page is set for privacy. When I find your email address I will send you an invitation to join my page. BTW, thanks for the compliment. :D
