K' folks, I'm totally excited so I hafta share:

There is a crew here in the front yard making a beautiful desert garden landscape in front of the house. Dozens of plants have just been dropped off and they are digging snug homes for them right now. There's going to be cactus around the edges of the yard, and the raised center will feature a large herb garden. Oooh - the plants are so pretty!!

You know I'm severely hampered in the picture-taking and uploading department! :o

But, point is taken, and I will add it to the list of pics to be done. I haven't forgotten that someone with prodigious home decorating skills offered to help make decorative sense of the living room if I ever get pics done and sent.
Still owning a 35mm makes the process a lot slower. :p

For now, just picture 8 guys in jeans and jackets digging in a pile of dirt, sticking cactus into mounds and wheeling wheelbarrows full of river rock into a dry river bed that is being created on a suburban front yard.
:D

Maybe I'll take a picture of the process - I just discovered that we ARE observing the MLK holiday, so instead of a really busy day, I have almost nothing to do! :p

Cool. That's exactly the kind of garden I want.

You should be here: the guys have been laboring since 7am, and as the hours pass they have been gradually removing layers of clothing.

Lessee - I wound up discovering mid-morning that I actually had the day off, so I spent it puttering around the house and catching up with old friends of yesteryear.

But in brief, yes, I have been watching the landscaping guys. Just not with the same zeal so heartily expressed by certain members of this forum.

I love everything about the desert (except maybe triple digit heat!). Yes, take & post a pic soon. Maybe you'll get cool birds hanging out in your front yard!

What kind of camera do you have? I have a canon and it came with software to load on the computer that manages pictures. My files are by date, I pick the date and then scroll through the pics, then drag and drop the picture on my desktop. Then I can follow the Soulforce forum directions for posting the picture. I have a MAC too (I know you are a Mac gal) but I rarely use iPhoto, I always use my camera software application.

zerb, my garden just died during our 3 weeks of winter here in Texas. I love hibiscus flowers, a tropical flowering plant native to Hawaii or Polynesia. They just don't do well in harsh weather. Our weather is so damn unpredictable and inconsistent. A cold front blows in with rain and yucky weather for about a day, then it warms up and can go from 30-40 degrees to 70 in about 2 days. Needless to say, all Texans have severe allergies and sinus issues due to the wierd weather we always have. But the most innocent victims are the beautiful flowers I love so much.

I wish I could plant my garden now, but we aren't out of the woods yet as far as cold weather goes. We could still get a few more cold fronts...

In my opinion, the only thing cold weather is good for is skiing, and it don't snow here in Houston but about every 20 years, and we don't have mountains. (sigh)!!!!

Enjoy your garden! Wish I could see it.

:lol::lol::lol:

I was so confused when I first moved to Houston. I would wear thick heavy winter coats and scarves in the morning, and by early afternoon I would be stripping down to a tee shirt. I totally remember the 30-degree swings in a single day.

The second year I lived there a record cold-snap happened. I remember it was headline news, "Arctic Cold!" or something of the sort, because it was down around 20 degrees in March!!! Seriously, by march we used to be in shorts and tank tops. So that was some cold snap.

Phoenix is having weird weather now. I finally get an all desert landscape in the front yard and what happens after the cactus gets planted?? Why of course! It RAINS!!!!!!:lol: It has rained here heavily and consistently all day - which it NEVER does in Phoenix. Something strange is going on.

Anyway - the front yard looks really cool. Or should I say, it looks really hot? When it isn't raining, it is the perfect landscape for the climate.

They put in a series of contoured mounds that give the impression of rolling sand dunes, studded with cactus. It makes our front yard look way larger than it actually is. There's a dry river bed twisting across. Hmm, there's been so much rain today who knows if some water might not actually be IN there now? :p:lol: And flagstone steps across the landscape making a short cut to the sidewalk - so I don't have to hike the mounds to get to the mailbox.

I'll take pictures. The fencepost cacti cast phenomenal, long diagonal shadows at sunrise!! The shadows are stellar.
