Email letter I sent today...
Dear Friends,
Some of you know that I am a leader in Soulforce Atlanta (www.soulforce.org), an organization which confronts religious homophobia, and I am a supporter of the School of the Americas Watch (http://www.soaw.org/new/), which seeks to shut down the American exportation of U.S. militarily-trained terrorists.
Rarely do these 2 organizations overlap although both of them are commited to nonviolent social change. However, this year a young man, Donte Smith, who crossed the picket line at the annual protest in Columbus, GA for closing the School of the Americas also participated in the Soulforce Equality Rides (http://www.equalityride.com/), in which youth bicycled across America to prayer-vigil protests at schools which have written policies of discrimination against LGBT folks such as Liberty University.
Under the Bush administration, people crossing the picket lines in Columbus have been punished much more severely than in the past. Nuns and college students are serving as much as 2 years in jail.
I am writing you to ask you to join me in writing Donte during holy week when his 6 month sentence begins. I have been writing to those SOA folks jailed for a couple of years and I have had some extraordinary blessings in response. Would you pick up a card at the store and dash it off to Donte and thank him for his nonviolent sacrifice for freedom for all people? I think this courageous young man should know his efforts are appreciated and I know you will be blessed, as I have been, to comfort him in prison.
Here is his address:
Donte Smith 91436-020
FMC Fort Worth,

His sentence starts April 11th. Please forward this to all your peacenik friends! :rainbow:
