Well, duh.
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. - A commission established to study same-sex civil unions in New Jersey has found in its first report that civil unions create a "second-class status" for gay couples, rather than giving them equality.
Story here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080217/ap_on_re_us/gay_marriage
I think it's very interesting that they have an official study proving what we've been saying all along - MLK, Jr. said it during the Civil Rights movement of the sixties, and it's still true: Separate is not equal and can never be.
Also, another part of the article states, "A conservative Princeton group, the National Organization for Marriage, has aired radio commercials that say allowing gay marriage would undermine some religious teachings that homosexuality is wrong."
This is another example of why I think, OMG, somebody please stop the political-church machine before it gets any bigger! It reminds me frighteningly of a statement I heard Huckabee make (and if he wins presidency I swear I'm moving to Canada) that he is not of the opinion that it is even possible to involve one's religious convictions too heavily in one's political actions - he's stated outright that he wants to rewrite the Constitution to match the Bible - which means his own interpretation of the Bible, I'm sure.
God, save us from your "followers"!
Still, this is looking good for New Jersey, especially since the governor says he's willing to sign gay marriage into law as soon as the November elections are up! (I don't blame him for wanting to wait for that, either!)
