I have to tell this story, My wife and I thought it was cute.
Today Cindy and EM ate at a Subway. I worked late so they had a girls night out before American Idol.
After they left Subway EM said in reference to an employee working there, "He's gay" Cindy said, "how can you tell?" Then a typical, Mooom, response.
Then Em said, "I just want to go up to gay people and say, I think your okay!"
13 years old and I think she gets it.
One more. At church a couple week ago the sermon was about loving others and accepting those that are different than ourselves, Em looks up and says sarcastically, unless their gay.
She saw the unwritten footnote.

Children learn prejudices and intolerance from their parents and other influential people in their lives (relatives, friends, etc.). But mostly from their parents. Obviously your daughter is not learning that from you. She is learning that we are all the same, no one particular person or 'group' is better or worse than the other, and that we should live in harmony and not hatred.
That is because you and your wife are teaching her how to live Christ's message, obviously. Well done (and a huge thanks!).

In living our lives authentically, and setting a good example for our daughter, we are trying to teach her to feel pride in her parentage, and at the same time, educate her peers as well. She is doing a great job with it, and it is encouraging to know that our allies are doing the same. Thanks Sailaway and wife, and daughter!!!!

Proud of you Sailaway and your wife. Good job and I hope it is a trend among young people to do away with such silly notions of hatred and prejudice. The tide is turning, the pendulum is swaying...Just wait, equality is almost here....:)

How great your daughter is so accepting. :D:D:D we are changing the world one person at a time. I was surprised at my children also. I thought that my kids would be more upset that I am gay, but they have been wonderful. I asked my teen how she felt and she said "well, I have always had gay parents so its not like I see any difference here." True, her father is TG but not out of the closet, the big difference is that she has 2 mothers now and not a mother and father. My son is 11 and he told me that "I hate it when people say 'those gay people' because I tell them they should say 'those people' instead and not put gay in there, it's discrimination" He feels that we should all be just people, no lables. The best is my 8 year old, she actually did all the coming out for me at her school, to her teachers and the principal and other kids moms too!(was a shocker to say the least, she is WAY more out and proud than I am!) One child said to her "my mom said I can't talk to you or play with you because your mom is a lesbian" I thought Dani would be upset but instead she told that little girl "Well, I feel sorry your mom is so stupid about lesbians then" I guess it got back to the mom because they play together now. She really felt it was tragic that other people thought we were all that different.
Its awesome we are making a visible difference in the world one child at a time!

Thanks for the added stories. It's true kids can be cruel but it is also true that they can be a joy and lead us!
We are hosting a party to view the film, For the Bible Tells Me So'. I wish some of you here could share it with us. Pray that it will open door of opportunity to bridge a gap that exists between parents and children, church family's and opens thoughtful dialect amongst our friends.
