I'm proud to have joined in with the UCC members in not letting others (read Fox News and their fear-stirring reporting on Obama's pastor) define who the United Church of Christ is in narrow and distorted ways.
They have raised enough money to take out a full-page ad in tomorrow's New York Times. If they raise $26,000 more (https://secure.ga3.org/03/ucc_tell_our_story) they will put a second complimentary ad in USA Today.
The ad includes this statement:
We were the first mainline church to ordain an African-American (1785), a woman (1853) and an openly gay pastor (1972).

Very impressive! I still can't believe how many people took Obama's speech the wrong way, I personally really liked his speech on race and completely understood what he was saying.
...some people just don't understand... :disagree:

Jamie:
This is such powerful witness, such a beautiful example, IMHO, of what God and Jesus meant for all of us.
I had heard years ago, probably twenty years ago or more, about the UCC and its active embracing of persons in the LGBT community. One of the very few, and willing to state so openly.
I think I feel the need to call churches, political leaders and the heterosexual community to be called to a higher purpose, and actively and openly speak the words and follow those words with deeds.
Thanks for sharing this. :love::pray:
