I got a little surprise about an hour ago when I checked my bank account online: it's payday! (early because of the holiday, evidently)
so what did I do?
I promptly went over to amazon.com and bought some books, including that English Standard Version Thinline Bible I posted about a few days ago. It's a thinline, blue leather cover with a celtic (keltic!) cross on it.
I also bought "Equal Rites: Lesbian and Gay Worship, Ceremonies and Celebrations" yes, my partner and I are talking, just talking, but on a regular basis, about having a commitment ceremony.
I buy entirely too many books.

I can definitely identify, Keltic. Books are one of my biggest vices. We had a used book fair here on campus a couple of weeks ago, and I walked away with nine books that day (and stopped myself because I would have bought more) for maybe three bucks. And, the other part is, I never want to part with them, even if I haven't looked at them in years. I just like having them around.

Bridesmaid discussion aside (although I am also sure that Nate would make a beauteous one) Keltic, please let me know how that book is on ceremonies. My partner and I actually applied two summers ago for a marriage license in Mass., which was so emotional, but then never went back to follow through. We go through our own ambivalence about it, but I have always wanted the ceremony, the aisle, the veil, the PARTY, all of it! Keep us posted! PEace, Vanessa

Ya'll aren't the only ones who love to read. I am so far gone, I have books in every room of the house plus the car. I can't pass a Barnes and Noble without dropping a few hundred bucks. My wife is always saying, "Step away from the bookstore, resist, resist" Seriously, I love to read. :)
My wife feels in competition with my books. Hmmm. My books don't talk back or argue with me-maybe there is something to it.

Love books!
Could get lost for hours with those dratted things. Heheheh. Bookstores are dangerous places, especially since I married a guy with a high credit limit who loves to indulge his and my every whim. Every time we go in a bookstore, we leave with at least $50 worth of things we do not need. Last trip to Borders I even got another bunny (though plush bunnies really ARE a need)!
Keltic - that Bible sounds beautiful! How totally exciting that you are talking about a commitment ceremony. :weee:
All the best of the best to ya!

Or the Vices of Books.
I am a major offender. Built 9 foot tall bookcases to house the 14 boxes of books that were sitting under our piano for- gulp- a year or so. Just did my taxes and was amazed (again) to find that I spent a sizable sum on books. And the internet? Don't get me started. I get something in the mail at least once a week it seems. You can find the most amazing (I'm into hisorical books on the voice) for pretty much no money. Really.
Marriage: My partner and I used a book on gay marriage to plan our own ceremony and quickly veered off into making up our own thing. (It was a Buddhist ceremony) I am so glad we did the deed. Ceremony makes a difference. Even the later legal ceremony in Canada made a difference.
Do it! Do it! Do it Steve!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let us know how this book is. My girl and I talk about the future and although we're still a bit away from marriage, I'm one of those girls who's been planning the big day for years.
There are a few man/woman wedding traditions that I'm still trying to decide if and how I'd incorporate them into my own ceremony. Most of the specifics are still unspecified in my mind.
I know that this relationship is definitely headed in that direction and I didn't think I'd be able to commit to one person forever before her (not that I was really sleazy or anything, I just had a hard time picturing forever with one before I met this one, my one  ).
Go for it, keltic! Let us know when you confirm the decision so we can all take joy with you (and send gifts!).

I really like the new Bible.
Equal Rites is interesting. I like some of the ceremonies, although, I'm not real interested in making a political statement with our commitment ceremony, so at least one of the ceremonies in the book is out.

Steve and Scott,
I pray the ceremony cements the committment you have already made to each other, and that the love, respect, mutuality, nurture and joy continue to increase exponentially. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Oh, yeah! Don't forget to let your hair down (sorry) and party like you mean it.

Keltic,
I have said this many times before, but I just like you! I really do! You take the time to watch dumbass movies with your kids, sit through them patiently, and just enjoy the time with them, when you could be reading one of your beloved books, instead. My 16yo loves Corky Romano, White Chicks,Cat In The Hat, etc... She loves for me to watch them with her. I have to admit, I am not as willing to watch it for the 100th time as you might be. Personally I like Corky Romano, because I think his character is a flaming homo, and I love the drag theme in White Chicks, and how they seem to understand what being a girl is all about. Anyway, I think you are a great dad.
You and I have the unique experience of being in a straight marriage once before. I can tell you that I wanted some elements of a straight wedding, but I also wanted it to be nothing like my first wedding. My first wedding was in August, and very hot. I actually got overheated and was nauseous through the entire ceremony. Hmmm, maybe an omen? My last wedding was small, intimate, beautiful, and much cooler. We got married in the Minolta tower overlooking Niagara Falls by a Unitarian minister from St. Catherine's. She was escorted in by a friend of ours to the song Tender Love,by the Force MD's (I think), and I sang to her, Nobody Loves Me Like You Do by Anne Murray.
I love books, much to the chagrin of my wife, but I love to read, and I have to say, it borders on addiction. I just like to escape for a few hours, immerse myself in somebody's imagination and get lost in the plot, the actions and the love scenes (gives me ideas ;)) Of all the addictions I could have, I think reading is fairly harmless. What do you think? Anyway, good luck with your plans, and I think Nate would make a lovely bridesmaid, Daniel too.

as some of you have been able to gather from the "frustrated" thread, I've had some stressful and rather frustating days this week. My drama at school is not over yet, and I'm absolutely appalled at the response I've received from Gateway computers.
Today I requested a meeting with my Union president and the Superintendent of the school district. In doing so, I realized that I may be insulting my immediate supervisors, the principals of 2 buildings that I work in. So, I gathered my courage, walked into the office of one of those principals, and informed him that I'd requested the meeting and that he should not take it as "going over his head" and that I understand no one is "out to get me" but combining classes is not acceptable. The superintendent is the only administrator with any real power to solve this problem, and i want to make him aware of the situation. I actually have the support of this principal now!
so I was feeling strong, on a roll. Let's keep it going. I left the school and drove directly to my parents' home. my heart pounded hard in my chest for the nearly 45 minutes that it took for me to bring up the subject. "I have something to tell you. Scott and I are having a commitment ceremony next year. We feel that we need to make a commitment instead of just 'living together' and we've decided to have this ceremony." It wasn't exactly dead silence, but it wasn't a bad reaction either. I was asked about the exact date. Then the dead silence came. so I said "I know you don't understand all this, but I wanted to tell you before you heard it from someone else. I also don't like keeping things from you."
They know now, and I feel much better! The reaction wasn't bad, and certainly wasn't what I feared as the worst. I figured that they could have just refused to attend, which they did not do! Their interest in the exact date also tells me that they may even attend! They also had questions about who would be officiating, and the fact that I have 2 ministers willing to do this for us, probably works in my favor.
Time. time will help them understand. I called my brother afterwards and asked him if they had called him yet. they hadn't. he guessed that by Christmas they'll be about where they are comfortable with all this. He reminded me how much better they are now than when I came out. Things are looking good. I have hope that they will attend my wedding!

Steve,
You really were on a roll! Wow! I hope you do get some resolution with this computer issue. That is so aggravating. Congratulations on the response from your parents about your wedding. Hopefully, they will come. How did they react when you came out to them? What about your brother?
It is two days into the new school year for us here in Texas. I am already having problems with posting my new website on the districts website. Ugh!!! I don't know how all the computers get suddenly possessed over the summer and lose everything. Oh well, it will all work out hopefully. Have a great year and by this time next year, you and Scott will be happily married. Cool, huh?:D

Interesting with your parents. As a parent I have found our children can force us to take another look at what we believe on lots of topics.

in this case of combining classes, I would have nearly 40 second graders in my music room. I do not have enough equipment, resources, and space to teach this many students in one period.

perhaps because it was becoming too large?
