Hi Marc,
Welcome. :):rainbow:
So, a typical college question: what's your major?

Glad you found your way here and hope to see you in the discussions. If you don't mind me asking: what kind of school are in in? State School? Bible School?
Just curious. :D I went to an Assemblies of God school back in the stone age.:lol:
I just love it the way you say it: you are a 'gay college student'. May not seem like much to some, but to those of my generation, that's a huge leap forward. No one my age would have dared to utter such words, especially at the school I was at.
Again: welcome!

Well, I guess I have a few questions to answer.
I go to a private catholic college just outside of Chicago, called Benedictine University. I am a graduating senior with a BA in Social Science and a minor in Secondary Education. I am out with most people here on campus and have had only one incident where someone was discriminating. My friends promptly stood up for me even before I had a chance to stand up for myself, and most of my friends are conservative catholic republicans. It has been an interesting four years.
It makes me feel good to have all of you take an interest in my life. Thank you very much. I am happy to answer any other questions. I too have a couple of questions tho and maybe someone could answer them for me. I am trying to become more active in the whole equal rights issue in this country for LGBT individuals and I am unsure how to do so, does anyone have any suggestions? Any advice would be great.
Thanks again for the warm welcome.
:D:pray:

I'm sure there are some civil rights groups in your area that provide information about political issues and rallies or other events that will allow you to get started. Is there a gay & lesbian community center nearby? what about subscribing to some newsletters? I know that I've been informed of rallies and protests just by signing up for emails from lgbt groups.
Then you can always come here for support, we've encouraged each other to get more actively involved in the political process!
Welcome
I'm glad you are here. If you would like to make some more friends, this is a great place for it. Perhaps you can wander through the threads and make comments...that's how we get to know you here.
I had to smile at your "republican friends (I'm pretty sure we have a few "republicans" around here) who defended you before even you could. It's nice when stereotypes get broken, no matter which one, eh?
anyway...again, glad you're here...hope you enjoy and stick around, become a part of the community.

Welcome. I am in Michgan and I heard they have a HUGH pride in Chicago. I keep wanting to get there, but so far have only been to Lansing.
I thinks it's awesome your friends stand up for you. I have found the people I thought would be more condensending are the ones who stand up for me the most. I think it's becasue they know me as a person and then my sexuality second.

Marc,
Glad to have you here. You say your conservative Republicans defended you. I usually vote Republican (not sure about this election though!) and I am proudly gay. The misconception is that all Republicans are far right and homophobic. Most of my co workers are Republicans. They all are supportive and accept me as a gay man. I have experienced a reversal of discrimination. I have noticed some minorities that are Democrats at my work place, do not accept my homosexuality. I find that strange, but it is just my experience.
I've recently been noticing that conservatives accept me more than liberals lately! Go figure. God has a sense of humor. The minute I am tempted to stereotype, God has a way of putting me in my place!
Gods blessings to you Marc!! :)

Hi and welcome! Sorry, not a Simpsons fan, or Family Guy for that matter. I'm not a Republican, either... (I have big disagreements with both parties). You are very lucky to be accepted the way you are at a conservative Catholic college! In my experience individual Catholics tend to be more open-minded and liberal, despite what their leaders tell them they should believe. It is the Evangelicals who scare me. Of course there are exceptions to every rule.

Antiochian,
I agree with you concerning the fact that Catholics are usually more accepting of gay people. That is one of the reasons I ended my relationship with the Evalangical church and went back to my Catholic roots. Even though the Pope is not gay affirming, many individual Catholics are more open and will more readily discuss the issue.

My school might be a traditionally conservative school but many of the people who go here are very accepting and more liberal. I have always thought that catholics were more accepting of homosexuals than any other group of christianity. My father, for example, is an evengelical and he does not like the fact that i am gay. He even told me once that i am "of the devil" just because i am gay but he still says that he accepts me and loves me. Kinda mixed messages if you ask me. My mother is much more accepting than he is and she is catholic. (they are divorced BTW)

Bless your heart! You're not of the devil! But I think you already know that.
