I am presently involved with a group interested in forming independent media that speaks to poor and working communities. It's about systemic organizing through building grassroots media. I have been active with the group for a couple of months.
I became fed up with mainstream media after 9/11. The major news outlets are more interested in the shareholders and and advertisers than they are reporting objectly about the working class and poor communities. This is even more evident in the LGBTQI communities. I'm learning how to be an organizer.
Two areas I see where grassroots media would be valuable is with teachers and the LGBTQI communities. There are many people unhappy with the government and with mainstream media. I am responsible for recruiting volunteers and speaking engagements. I have never organized anything but I want to make a difference. So far things are going good.
