My well meaning but homophobic sister sent me the most ludicrous, comical, and downright asinine CD in the mail. It was entitled "Homosexuality Reinterpreted" preached at First Baptist Church of Atlanta, Georgia by none other than Andy Stanley, son of Charles. The basic argument he makes is that homosexuality is wrong, it is not a normal orientation, and if at least men "become" gay, without fail it is because of a domineering mother and a distant, weak father. He also tells gay people to quit "interpreting" the Bible to make it include us, instead we should just abandon the faith, walk away from it and go join churches that don't preach the Word of God, because God does not want us in his true church. Or don't go anywhere at all. He said nothing about lesbians... Hmmm! He never said "gay" or "lesbian", he said "homosexuals vs evangelicals" He always referred to the gay community as "practicing homosexuals". I don't know about ya'll but I don't practice anything. I am very adept at it...
Point is, I know better than to listen to this drivel, but I thought I ought to give it a listen, and after about 30 minutes of it, I was just almost laughing because it was so stupid. Is he kidding? (Stanley)
Just want to know what ya'll think, as if I have to ask....

What is the point of the Bible if not to be interpreted? Perhaps he should stop "interpreting" it against us.

Pardon my French here...
That is complete and utter bullshit. Telling someone to abandon their faith in God is completely against the Bible--any educated preacher or whatever should know that! It is blasphemy to say that God doesn't want someone because the Bible says that salvation is for EVERYONE, not a designated group of people. This breeder needs to go work at McDonald's, he obviously doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.
Need I say more?

Drew,
I totally agree. I have never listened to such hostility and misinformation in my life. It was complete BS. What astounded me was that this is the son of Charles Stanley, who is well respected and a gifted speaker and man of God. I don't necessarily expect Andy to spout off or regurgitate all his dad's stuff, I mean he has to think for himself, but there are also many gay people in and around Atlanta and for him to state boldly to them to just abandon the faith and quit reinterpreting it for our agenda, is just ecumenical suicide. He is hanging himself by such divisive comments.

My fiancee's mother calls her and spouts off similar things... or did until she discovered that her favorite priest at her church isn't against "the gay lifestyle".
It's hard when people we love think they're trying to save us from some horrible fate, but can't understand how they're using their unbased fears to make our lives more difficult. It's all fear and love, I'm sure - as you've said - below all that is just your sister thinking she's going to save you from some horrible fate. When her mother calls, we be patient while she talks and just repeat the same old reply that love can't be changed by threats or phone calls (or CDs and sermons).
