When you listen to the homophobic theocrat - from any faith community or system - do you not wonder what happened to the faith community whom you thought you understood and supported ?

Do you almost expect a new iconography or statuary - one that theologically represents the right-wing affirming godhead? It has a fact in Euro-Christian history that the Churches - C, P, or O :D - have aligned themselves with the Crown or its equivalent.

The Fourth Estate, the Political Establishment, the Army and the Church Hierarchy - an age-old recipe for fascism. This time, the Reformers will lead the charge, after a weakened Mater Ecclesia has been wounded by paedophile scandals scapegoated to their monogamous and celibate gay clergy in adult consentual relationships, often with other clergy.

The tragedy and simultaneously, the saving grace about Elmer Gantry is that he will always behave as if Christ is on his lips, and not in his heart. Eventually, but never too late, the layperson in the pew finally " gets it."

Er. . .yeah. Yeah, I hear ya clearly on this one (I think).

Well except that I don't envision a change in iconography or statuary to go with the anti-gay sentiments, because those sentiments don't strike me as new, only as newly universally politicized.

Yes, certainly the church has been interwoven with the state throughout history - to the detriment of both.

I don't know what Fourth Estate means, so I can't comment about that. But I do hear clearly your outcry about the scapegoating of gay clergy and the concommitant weakening of the church.

Zerbie-

The media....visual, aural and print.....now definitely owned and operated by multinational conglomerates who feed each other and protect their $$$$$ interests worldwide at the expense of the people, and the political smokescreens that they own and operate like a subsidiary company.

The hope, of course, is that the masses will someday awaken and realise that they are controlled and manipulated by a handful of men and fewer women.

I agree with TJ, we must pray and have faith.....but good works is not an epistle of straw for me personally......:D . Civil disobedience and telling truth to power - even when that power can incarcerate or eviscerate - is true courage....and my definition of nonviolence.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. Yeah, there IS that too! Quite a pretty little mess we're in.

Not much wiggle room for dealing with it, but I think we're on the right track.
