My parents were hetero, forced to marry because of me and dreadful parents. I firmly believe that the main criteria to be a parent should be the desire to be one. I have therefore always been disgusted at the way people of less accepted lifestyles are treated. Having recently become a christian, read What's So Amazing About Grace, and learned about Mel White has only made me want to do anything to help. Please excuse any typos as I usually have a cat or dog on my lap. By typing Stranger at the Gate as a search I've found this site. This looks like a good place to start. I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone wants to throw my way. I've never blogged either - if that isn't glaringly obvious.

Thanks,

Laura

Hi Laura,

Welcome! This is a really nice, friendly, kind group of people. Sometimes (or is it often?) we act very silly. Sometimes (NOT very often) we argue. But for many of us, this is like an electronic "home" of sorts.

Thank you for your commitment to equality. Mel White has started something wonderful.

Soulforce has a number of actions planned (or already happening) through which we attempt to make the world a kinder place. One of them which might appeal to you, whether you are a straight ally or somewhere in the LGBT spectrum is this one: www.sevenstraightnights.org
Check it out!
In fact, if you haven't already, browse around this website. There is some interesting reading floating around here.

Glad you are with us.

So how many cats and dogs do you have? :)

Yes, I can safely say that Soulforce is a great place to start. Mel is an amazing person, with a strong will to bring truth to others about being religious (Christian or otherwise) and LGBT orientation. Enjoy the forums, and come back and let us know about yourself...... Peace, Vanessa

Welcome to the site, Laura. I am reading 'What's So Amazing About Grace?' and read about Mel White. That chapter really touched my heart. I have read Mel's book 'Religion Gone Bad'. I recommend it highly.

It was so nice to be so warmly welcomed! I've looked into volunteering with a number of organizations these last few months and was amazed at the lack of response I got. I guess I was knocking on the wrong doors. I really appreciate the web site and book suggestions too.

At the moment, I have one cat and one dog. I'd have my own ark of animals if my husband would let me. They're my surrogate friends and kids.:)

I hear ya on all counts. I've been trying to volunteer for decades, since I was little. The past couple years have been the only time anyone has actually said yes to the idea. (Go figger)

Gotcha on the animals. We have plush ones. We figure we travel too often and have too much weirdness in our schedules to properly care for live animals. So we have wound up with a huge menagerie of plush cuddlies. It looks like a toy store in here! :D:love:
