Bishop Robinson stands and acts in full accord with his convictions and seeks to keep the communion inclusive. Many of the traditionalists not only favor a literal reading of convenient parts of scripture, but also employ all kinds of dissimulation and recklessness with the "truth" (was that non-judgmental enough?). Rowan Williams stands ready to acquiese to all manner of traditionalist diatribe and appease those who would tell the Anglican communion to take a hike.

Oi! The article's good, though the headline stinks.

+Gene didn't 'defy orders'. The Archbishop of Canterbury doesn't have the authoritative power to 'order' Bishops from another Province to do anything. Instead++Rowan didn't invite +Gene to the conference, which only served to single him out, since he's a duly elected/consecrated Bishop and certainly qualified for an invite.

And technically, +Gene isn't attending the conference. He's visiting the locale around the conference, at the invite of some Church of England clergy and Bishops.

It's clear though that ++Rowan's decision not to invite +Gene, in order to downplay his significance, has seriously backfired. The blogger MadPriest has posted about the recent BBC interview with +Gene and Sir Ian McKellen, and has included video of the interview. MadPriest has also posted the video of the heckler (http://revjph.blogspot.com/2008/07/scruffy-boy-with-girlie-hair-heckles.html) interrupting +Gene's sermon this past Sunday.
