Without One Plea

The sermon was reached, the alter call given,
The choir stood and in unison was singing,
A song for all “Just as I am with out one plea,”
But I felt the song wasn’t meant for me.

The preacher had spoken of abominations,
And how they filled our great nations.
How the homosexual was damned to hell,
Based on the scriptures he knew so well.

However, the song seemed to be so contrary,
To the message he spoke so arrogantly.
For if God truly wants me just as I am, you see,
I should not have to plead a case of my sexuality.

My heart was heavy for I know who I am to be,
And it was exactly how God created me.
Not by choice but by an act divine,
God gave me gifts and called them mine.

Scripture distorted to make one feel,
That God in your life could never be real.
So I called out to God and his mercy,
Asking him if his love was for me?

His answer was wrapped in simplicity,
Because he is love, and love sets you free.
And there is no doubt inside of me.
That he loves me, “Just as I am without one plea.”

I read your poem and you touched upon something in the next to last stanza. Scriptures have been distorted (intentionally or unintentionally) to justify slavery, patriarchy, and even violence against LGBT people.

The last stanza reminds me of when I reconciled my faith with my transgenderism. God is interested in our hearts. Jesus loved all regardless of who they were.

Thank you for sharing, Bill.

Yes. This is touching. It's personal and it communicates your feeling so directly.
How beautiful, the way you connect to God for the ultimate 'answer.'

Bill, that was beautifully done! Thank you. You are very talented and such beauty comes from the pain you have obviously experienced. How wonderful to know that you feel God's love and presence despite your sexuality which the world condemns but which God created. Encore, please!:applause::applause::applause::applause:

Beautiful! Thank you.
A truth which does not set me free is not the Truth.

When I get to my personal coming out section of the book I am writing, could I use your poem? You'll get credited!

Beautifully done! :)

GReat poem!!!!!:):):)

I also love the hymn "Just As I Am". I throw pots and I carve "JAIA" for "just as I am" on the bottom of my pottery along with my initials. I also love the song "I knew whom I have believed".

"I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I've commited unto him against that day."
To me that hymn means "OK I a mere mortal so I don't know why god loves me but I don't have to worry about, God just does."
