I will attend a tea party in honor of my friend who married his partner in California a few weeks ago. I'm looking for a nice dress to wear. I've never attended a tea party, so it's a good chance for me to get some culture :D. I'll tell how it was.

I've never been to a tea party either. Will they have more than tea? I hope they at least have cake. A party is not a party without cake. Unless it's a beer party. And then the cake ends up on the lawn.
Enjoy yourself at the party Gennee. :)

A hat! And white lace gloves. And a 1940's style dress. That's what Oyx does. And fashionable pumps. And pearls. And don't forget the red lipstick. Very important. Altogether, a great ensemble.

Picture!! Picture, please!
(Psst: I knew Oxy would know what to wear. And no one wears hats and pearls as well as she.)

Taken from Vogue Living (Australia), May/June issue, 2005, in an article on 'haute tea'. Dame Oxy (she was awarded the distinction in 1884) sewed on each seed pearl in the hat. It took her many hours. But the Art of Living is everything!
And there is nothing like afternoon Darjeeling. Sigh......

Obviously one of Oxy's lucky protegées.
Almost as elegant as the Dame herself. Allllmost. :)

I'm picking up a dress in the morning. About the lace gloves and hat? I'll skip it for now. :D

i'd probably skip the gloves, too. But the hat? Darling Gennee, if it's a garden tea-party (or otherwise outdoors) please re-consider getting a fabulous chapeau! :agree: There are so few suitable opportunities to show one off these days. :) Even if you still choose not to get one, trying on hats is a blast!

Dress where you feel comfortable. I hate going to places dressed up and I feel as if I have something crawling up my butt and I'm trying to descretely pinky finger it out as it is eventually found out - nothing is there.
OK really, I've never been in that situation, but just wanted to make you laugh. Did it work???
Really my friend, do dress to make you feel comfortable. :) And have fun at the "Partay"...
BTW - I love tea!

I am very pro-hat. So of course, encourage you to don a hat for the occasion. Hats are fun, hats are nowadays, sadly, a neglected fashion item, hats protect from the sun, and from the rain. Not at their best in high winds, though.
Consider this an endorsement of the Hat Lifestyle.

In his song "Here's to the ladies who lunch" from the famous show in the 70's, Company.....
Does anyone still wear a hat?
Yeah! I wanna say. Hats are really great stuff. An underused fashion item, hats are grand and make a wonderful statement. Full of dignity and presence. Can't go wrong with a hat! :D

The tea party was great!!! There were many people there, chatting and having a wonderful time. It was a casual affair (no hats :D) but I wore the new turquoise blouse I purchased a few days ago. I did purchase a white dress (my first) and jacket just in case.
Edrick and Noel were married in California and they are a lovely couple. I was able to share my story with a gay man and we seem to connect. I actually felt that I was with family.
I will get a couple of pictures and post them when I receive them.

So am I, Zerbie. If the affair was formal, I would have worn a hat and gloves. I pray someday I'll be able to do that. One of my dreams is to attend some kind of formal affair.

My mom wore hats and always received compliments. Hats are a lost fashion item. I love the style of the '30s,'40s, and '50s because they were classy.

I have only been to ones my little ones have thrown, but our wedding reception is a 'tea reception' and we consider it casual (finger foods, salads and finger sandwiches.)I would think that yours is also. Maybe lite refreshments and snacks.
Usually you wear informal wear, a sundress or a tea length dress,(one that hits at mid calf). A nice light weight summer suit would be ok, if it was not a dark color either, like one with maybe a shell(a sleeveless top, not a tanktop)or light blouse also is fine. Crop pants, gauchoes(wide legged pants, great for wide hips!)or linen dress pants would work. As your hostess what she would determine the type of dress is.
