Hi folks,

Recently, Scott linked to a Box Turtle Bulletin discussion of the marriage amendment in Arizona.

Does anyone here know of any other gay-related or progressive blogs where the AZ amendment is being mentioned? Just wondering if so, would anyone be willing to share links here so that I can check 'em out?

Thanks.

Pretty sure Seething Mom (http://seethingmom.blogspot.com/) is living there, though it looks as though she's been living in real life lately (Do people actually do that?!).

I really only read the LJ groups I'm in (there's a bunch), seethingmom, truthwinsout (which doesn't seem to be mentioning the Arizona business) and 365gay.com. And, y'know, here.

I run across stuff all the time, and I always think of you when I do, but I'm never sure what thread to put it in or how relevant it is, etc. And like we already discussed, Jim @ BTB lives in AZ, so he tends to keep up with that stuff, in fact... he's got a search engine too, I just typed in Arizona and this is what came up (http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/results.htm?domains=www.boxturtlebulletin.com&q=arizona&sitesearch=www.boxturtlebulletin.com&client=pub-6993663115747596&forid=1&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&safe=active&cof=GALT%3A%23009000%3BGL%3A1%3BDIV%3A%23009000%3B VLC%3A009000%3BAH%3Acenter%3BBGC%3AFFFFFF%3BLBGC%3 AFFFFFF%3BALC%3A666666%3BLC%3A666666%3BT%3A666666% 3BGFNT%3A009000%3BGIMP%3A009000%3BFORID%3A11&hl=en).

Also, the Gay/Lesbian Wire on Topix is a good place to peruse, linking to articles and blogs. They've got about 20 headlines per page with a snippet of the story, so it's easy to just go down the list and see if it's something you're interested in. :)

From Pam's House Blend (http://pamshouseblend.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=6877):

Arizona's two Catholic bishops are urging the faithful to vote to constitutionally ban gays from marrying in the state.

Catholic bishops urge voters to ban gay marriage (http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/124908)

As she highlights:

The bishops' comments drew criticism from David Felten, minister of Fountains United Methodist Church in Fountain Hills.

"People have got this idea that they can speak for God and speak universally for all Christians," he said. And he noted it took the Catholic Church nearly 400 years to admit that Galileo was right and that the Earth is not the center of the universe.

BTB (http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/) has several of note over the past few days. Some good and some bad, and some of which you may be aware of of, but I'm posting them anyway - and for anyone else who's trying to keep up with what's going on in AZ.

A huge dust-up exploded on the front page of the Arizona Daily Star this morning (http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/257999). According to the Star, Kyrsten Sinema, campaign chair for Arizona Together, characterized Proposition 102 as a “mostly Mormon-backed attempt to rectify what it calls a ‘polygamy problem’ in the eyes of voters”:

Whaaa-aaaaa-aaaaat???? A mostly Mormon-backed attempt to rectify. . . a 'polygamy problem'????????
:confused::confused::confused::confused:

What the ---????? This doesn't sound anything like what I heard, from Kyrsten Sinema, hardly more than 2 or 3 days ago.

What the heck is this all about????? :confused::confused::confused:

:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Are you sure it wasn't this part:
Sinema said the ballot measure is a reflection of the Mormon church “working hard to convince the public that they are mainstream.”

Also, they're going all out on the CA amendmendment:
LDS Battle Plan for California Anti-Marriage Amendment (http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/2008/07/05/2318)

One of the commenters (CD) to that article had this to say, in part:
Well, behind the scenes the LDS and some other evangelical groups run the Boy Scouts national organization. Gotta give the kids a clique for squares and a career ladder, after all.

The concern about universities and such is basically that SSM could get legalized in Utah via lawsuit, and Mormon businesses and Brigham Young U might then get into legal hot water almost immediately. They’re almost more concerned about the strict scrutiny determination made by the California courts spreading than marriage legalization. But more immediately, this sort of argument could consolidate other major reactionary Christian groups’ votes- the Seventh Day Adventists with their university and medical school in Loma Linda, the Roman Catholic Church with its various institutions.

The comments were an interesting read, I think two of the commenters were both mormon (or former mormons), so they seemed to know what they were talking about.

Also, if you haven't checked out BTB lately, then I'm late on posting these :o:

Protest denounces Vatican policy on gays (http://www.azdailysun.com/articles/2008/12/07/news/world/20081207_world_186625.txt)
Sunday, December 07, 2008

ROME (AP) -- Gay rights proponents have denounced the Vatican's policy on homosexuals in a small protest near St. Peter's Square.

About 200 people, including some Italian politicians, gathered just outside Vatican City's borders Saturday evening to protest the church's opposition to initiatives to decriminalize homosexuality in all countries. The Vatican's envoy to the United Nations recently said that the Holy See opposes a proposed U.N. declaration to decriminalize homosexuality.

The Vatican says unjust forms of discrimination must be avoided. But it is worried that any U.N. resolution against discrimination on gender could pressure countries to recognize same-sex marriages.

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual activity is sinful.

:wave: *raises hand* :wave:

Define sin please.

What I get from the portion you block-quoted is that the church would rather let thousands die horrifying executions and thousands more be imprisoned and possibly tortured to death (or half to death) than "risk" seeing countries be 'pressured' to recognize legal contracts between partners.

Just sayin'.
