Yes. Heard of this weeks in advance. What a thing to pray for - that someone's speech gets rained on.
Seems to me there are far more important things to be prayed for.
And yes, it crossed my mind as the convention went on that gee, the weather held up just fine.

If I were the Angry God (TM) believed in by many fundamentalists, I think I'd get kind of pissed off about people bugging me for something so very trivial. Like, don't want him to be your president? Why don't you pray for favourable voter turn out or something?

If I was the Angry God (TM) and a bunch of religious fanatics prayed for it to rain on their opponents political convention, I'd probably send a gulf storm of some kind to take attention away from their own convention just to teach them a lesson.

Well, in my opinion, obviously our Creator approves of Obama because he did not send rain they prayed for! I mean, if he really did not approve, he could have sent whatever the hell he wanted to right? Now, maybe he will send rain to where Focus on the Family is stationed!

You been havin' coffee chats with my DH? He mentioned several days ago how ironic it would be to have another hurricane hitting the gulf during the Rep convention, when they never fixed the Katrina damage. Nice reminder.

It's hardly within the tenets of the Christian faith to wish ill on another person, right? I mean, come on! Where is the love in action in praying to have another person's parade rained on?
The metaphysically minded would note that those who wish others ill only hurt themselves in the end, citing this law:
What you send out comes back to you. ;)
Which is a high-brow restatement the Golden Rule.

Some of us believe it comes back threefold......

Of course, speaking from the purely Christian assumption that THEY think The Creator is a male.....kinda fits into all that controlling behavior of alot of them have reguarding womens reproductive choices.:lol::lol::lol::lol:
And I think they are getting it back 3 times over, isn't Gustav coming at about the right time?(republican convention)

Yes, it appears due to ransack the gulf coast at the beginning of the R convention. The sad part is, the people of NO are not the ones running the Repub shenanigans, they are the ones the Repubs have ignored. It would indeed be ironic if the city is hit again, reminding us all of Katrina, just as the administration responsible for doing nothing is convening.

Its sad how innocent people pay for what others do. There are good republicans also. I work with a lady who is a staid Republican, but she is LGBT supportive. She always votes Republican.
It would be tragic if the city once again got hit. I remember some religious fanatics said that Katrina hit New Orleans because of the gay community down there. How would they explain if it Gustav hit? Would they blame Focus on The Family? No, they would not. Keltic believes in the Three-fold rule, I believe in Karma. What you release returns back to you. How tragic for New Orleans.

But, unfortunately, it's all too common. Some of them truly believe it's ok to pray for bad things to happen to people they don't happen to agree with. Then once in a while, someone comes along to fulfill that prayer (i.e., someone bombing an abortion clinic). People get hurt, sometimes they die. The ones praying will then blame the tragedy on others who they feel are wrong to God.
Why would anyone, especially one professing to be 'christian', want to send out so much negative energy towards another human? Just doesn't make sense, but it does exist.

It would be nice to think that Focus on the Family has positive goals for all families. Yet somehow, I don't think that this includes our families. I don't think that this is simply a matter of animosity. It seems more like denial.
Peace and Love, Bruce Chris

McCain moved to shorten the convention days. Wise move.

You never know, maybe if it does rain their next prayer will be "please piss on a Parade" :D
But yes, as has been said... it's disgusting that anyone can think that a faith based on love can justify hatred. Agreed with what tdogg said, and maybe more painful is seeing the victims then blame what happens on the church, and by extension on God - and knowing that, in the first step of that chain of logic at least, they are correct.

The damage is done, by association with Katrina alone.
And the timing is perfect.
Stuart Shepard: Would it be so wrong, if we asked people to pray for rain?
And BTW, aren't there life killing droughts that need rain?

I wrote this elsewhere too, but I think it bears repeating:
Matthew 5:44-48 (NIV) (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=matthew%205:44-48;&version=31;)
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.I don't think praying for your enemy to feel more pain was what was intended by those words. And as I think about it, isn't that really the sentiment behind that "prayer for rain?"

Apparently, enough Focus 'supporters' were upset by it that they pulled it, and then had the YouTube one's pulled too! (the one's that had 'made' by others)
I just ran across this one that remains (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohxdvio9n2Q). We'll see how long it lasts, but Good As You has it's own copy (http://www.goodasyou.org/good_as_you/2008/08/video-olbermann.html) of the original.
So he (FOTF's Stuart Shepard) had to make another video (http://www.goodasyou.org/good_as_you/2008/08/video-rain-turn.html) apologizing for the first video! (from G.A.Y.)

In the Wicca tradition calling down a curse makes the person calling the curse vulnerable. In the Hindu tradition, it would be called karma.
On the streets, it's "what goes round, comes round."

Yes. We're in a ten-month drought here in the South. Maybe if I call Focus on the Family, they can make it rain on my poor lawn. And if they refuse, maybe they'll change their minds if I get Obama to stand in my yard.

And now...
Pray for Diarrhea

And:
Pray for a Tornado

And it certainly wouldn't be complete without the Mea Culpa for the first video (this is real):

Does Focus even have a 'prayer warrior' department? Or do they just rely on their "Stoplight" videos whenever there's a "need" for rain?
And if they refuse, maybe they'll change their minds if I get Obama to stand in my yard.
Obama? Any gay-Chistian on the street publicity would piss them off more.
Get Mel White and the media to stand on your lawn. That would be rain.

OMG Patrick! Hilarious videos! Especially the diarrhea one. I'm busting a gut! Has anyone heard what dear old Dobson has to say about the video (if anything)?

How prophetic that turned out to be.
Patrick,
This was way to funny. OMG. When I think about it, maybe there is a God after all, and maybe "God" allows organizations like FOF just to provide fodder for parody?
This reminds me of the story in the bible of Elijah and the prophets of Baal. As the story goes, each group of believers prayed for a sign from their particular "God" and which ever God answered was deemed God. I kind of like the idea of those touting Gods name putting their money where there mouth is and actually asking "God" to demonstrate in some way we can all see that God agrees with their point of view. So, who's "God" was God the night of the speech?
