I was just wondering where you go for comfort when you're having a rough time? What verses in the Bible,Torah, Koran, Buddhist teachings or other spiritual teaching helps you?

For me, one that really calms me is

Psalms 46:10 Be still and know that I am God.

I would love to hear what gets you through those rough spots in life. They just may help me and others! Also, do you have a quiet meditation time set aside every day? What do you do? What do you read? Does it help? I am trying to do this in my own life and would love to hear how others fill their spiritual cup on a daily basis.

OO!! I love that one too. My favorite though, is Romans 8:38-39.

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

But there is a whole lot more of the Bible I like too!

I actually have a favorite gospel hymn that comes to mind every time I am going through a rough period in my life. The name of the song is "The Lighthouse." Basically it tells about how we get tossed around in the storms of life and it thanks God the lighthouse, because without the lighthouse where would my ship be. Gospel music has always been an inspiration to me and I guess it soothes me and calms my mind and heart. Here are the lyrics:

There's a lighthouse on a hillside
that overlooks life's sea.
When I'm tossed He sends out a light,
light that I might see.
And the light that shines in darkness now
Will safely lead me on
If it wasn't for the lighthouse
This ship would sail no more.

Oh I thank God for the lighthouse
I owe my life to Him
King Jesus is the lighthouse
Upon the rocks of sin
He has shone a light around me
That I could clearly see
If it wasn't for the lighthouse
Then where would this ship be.

Everybody that lives around us
says tear the lighthouse down
You know the big ships
they don't sail by this way no more
so what's the use of it standing 'round?
Ahh, but then my mind goes way on back
to that stormy night,
when just in time, oh thank God I saw the light
T'was the light from that old lighthouse
that still stands up there on a hill.

Oh I thank God for the lighthouse
I owe my life to Him
King Jesus is the lighthouse
Upon the rocks of sin
He has shone a light around me
That I could clearly see
If it wasn't for the lighthouse
Then where would this ship be.

Oh, If it wasn't for the lighthouse
Then where would this ship be.

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

This verse gives me hope when I feel my life isn't going anywhere.

A couple years ago, Fernando Ortega wrote Psalm 63 into a song. (Psalm 63 was written while King David was exiled in the Desert of Judah.) It's one of my favorites now.

=====

“Oh, God, You are my God”

Oh, God, you are my God. Earnestly, I seek you.
My soul thirsts for you. My flesh yearns for you.
In a dry and weary land, where there is no water.

I remember you at night, through the watches of the night,
In the shadow of your wings, I sing because you help me.
My soul clings to you, and your hand upholds me.

You alone. You alone.
You alone. You alone.

=====

Psalm 139 - When people write to us at Soulforce, about their confusion and questions regarding their sexual orientation and gender variances, I always recommend reading this verse remembering that God has always fully known us and we are "wondrously made," Kara

I love the verses so far. Here is another one I really like. It is the 11th chapter of the Tao Te Ching.

We join spokes together in a wheel,
but it is the center hole
that makes the wagon move.

We shape clay into a pot,
but it is the emptiness inside
that holds whatever we want.

We hammer wood for a house,
but it is the inner space
that makes it livable.

We work with being,
but non-being is what we use.

Isaiah 61:3 ... to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness...

Matthew 22:36-40 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

( and on a lighter note...)
1Timothy 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.

There have been many saying and verses that have stuck in my brain over the years, some more than others. Often, a line from A Course in Miracles comes to mind when I am in a rough patch. It goes something like this" "What you think is the problem is not the problem." I've gotten a lot out of this thought because it helps my mind pull back from reacting. It's a wry sort of statement. And when I think it, I imagine a bearded Doctor Freud intoning the words.

Lately, I've been thinking about the following phrase, also from CIM.

I can be happy now.

This helps me see that I can perceive things differently, especially when I am down or upset.

But to tell the truth, the things that have helped me the most are practices which are nonverbal. I've written on other threads about one key Buddhist practice- that of Tonglen.

http://www.shambhala.org/teachers/pema/tonglen1.php

This practice has helped me more than anything else in the past two years. It's helped me deal with a major illness (tinnitus) as well as other life trauma. I put myself to sleep practicing it, and wake up practicing it. It's the first thing I think of in the morning. I lie in bed and practice- not moving a muscle- and have a deep sense of peace before rising. Not a bad way to start the day. ;)

In substance, I see it as similar- if not identical- to the practice of the Jesus Prayer. Having practiced that as well, I find that both takes one to an open hearted 'place'. where one experiences compassion for one's self as well as others.

I absolutely love that! I have her book "When Things Fall Apart" My therapist has suggested I read it but right now it is collecting dust on my nightstand! My therapist uses a lot of Buddhist teachings. I will have to ask her if she has used this. I think it could really help me when I am anxious and need to center myself....like everyday!

Thanks Daniel and everyone that has sent their favorite passages. I have put them all on my list!

"I will accept no bull from your house" Psalm 50:9

It gives me comfort when the fundies start spouting their nonsense. :D Unfortunately most of the newer translations have cleaned it up. :(

My wifes is....Yield and remain whole.(taoist)

Mine is the verse from our wedding:(which is why I wanted it)

Now you will feel no rain, for you will be each others shelter, now you will feel no cold for you will be each others warmth, now you will feel no loneliness for you will be each others family, enter now into your dwelling and may your days be fruitful and long upon the Earth.(Cherokee blessing)

It reminds me that I am not alone and that I always can go to into her arms and find my home.

I have several of my favorite verses:

Ephesians 2:8 & 9- "For by grace you have been saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Romans 8:28- All things work together for them who love the Lord, and are called according to his purpose.

There are many more, but off the top of my head, those are my two favorite.:)

Mine comes from that oh so controversial book of Revelation, the sheer poetry of this verse speaks volumes, and helps remind me that no matter how tough things get, God will make it all right in the end:

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Then he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true."

Acts 20:9 A young man named Eutychus was sitting in a window. As Paul was talking on and on, Eutychus was gradually falling asleep. Finally, overcome by sleep, he fell from the third story and was dead when they picked him up.

This verse gives me a chuckle because it's a clear case of one of Paul's speeches boring somebody to death. But it has a happy ending when Paul brings him back to life again.:applause: Yay Paul.
