Scary "Church"

I was reading a blog I randomly found today and I came upon this disgusting group (or "church" as they call themselves.) The group is made up mostly of one family and only has about 100 members or so. Their websites are godhatesamerica.com and godhatesfags.com

This disgusts me and saddens me to know there are such hateful people in the world. :(:(:(

We've known about them for a while. They were sued not too long ago for violating the Fallen Heroes Act.

Yes, these people have been widely known to the gay community. They are a fear and hate driven group. They regularly put on demonstrations that seem to give them a VERY bad image in the eyes of most of the public.

They do not seem to have goals that make any sense. They make themselves look more and more bizarre and ridiculous, and may even cause gay people to be seen in a more positive way. I posted this a few years ago:

A few years ago, Fred Phelps came to town to protest the local MCC church, during the gubernatorial election, and most of the gubernatorial candidates came to MCC to protest HIM. Police security was provided by Captain Sharon Lubinski, an out lesbian, and the Dykes on Bikes came by in a noisy show of support. I love it!

We need to keep an eye on them, but I refuse to worry about them.

Good ol' Fred...... sometimes I think he has done more for gay rights than any advocacy group. His level of crazy hate is so extreme that people actually think about things like "Hmmmm, I guess gay people are discriminated against. Who knew?" :rolleyes:

He protested at a union ceremony in Chapel Hill once. We went to counter-protest. A car came by and a woman stopped and yelled at Fred "You wanna tell me why I gotta explain to my 5 year old what a faggot is just because you don't have anything better to do!"

Of course, Chapel Hill is a liberal city, but I think some of that is old fashioned Southern paternalism. As in "Damn those outside agitators coming in here and making trouble. They need to leave our people alone. They may be queers, but dammit, they're OUR quers!"::lol::lol:

I was surprised to find myself in agreement with Shirley Phelps-Roper (or was it Roper-Phelps? It's been awhile since she's turned up somewhere) on one thing: LOTS of people are hypocrites, specifically when you look at how no one really cared when they were protesting gay people's funerals, but when they started in with straight (military) funerals, suddenly people started passing laws to protect mourning families (some of which are still only restricted to military funerals, if I remember correctly).

They are nothing if not consistent. When you really think about it, they have more integrity than most of us. Not saying that they're right, and they're certainly unpleasant, but they do have character.

Yes, I believe the gay community has been aware of the "church" for some time now. I know I have been aware of them since they tried to invade the funeral of Randy Schilts back in the 1990s. They are thoroughly reprehensible--how they can call themselves "Christian" is beyond me.

As for his followers...they are mostly family and extended family. From the research I've done, I see alot of verbal and emotional abuse (at the least) within the family. They live practically in a compound, very cult-like... the few (two, I think) Phelps sons who left have been disowned and left with just the shirts on their backs. They report physical abuse as well. I have alot of compassion for the followers, but I can really get my ire up with Fred himself. As the patriarch, the pastor, the controller, the primary abuser of his family....

I may get shot for this, but there is something strangely likable about Phelps. Maybe it is his rawness. He hates us, and he tells the world that we're going to Hell. He is unpleasant, and wrong, but somehow I can't bring myself to dislike as I do men like Dobson or O'Reilly. Maybe it's just that he's much more entertaining than any of the other bigots out there. I honestly think I might cry if he ever just stopped. If he came over to our side, that would be great, but if he was just silenced, we would lose our best friend, the only man who could get Fox News to defend us.
