Here in Winston-Salem I've already made a half dozen attempts to contact people to organize a protest at City Hall but I keep hitting dead ends. I've been out of the loop for so long that I've lost contact with all local activists.

Christine - If you're interested in helping to get something organized over in Greensboro let me know as soon as possible. Maybe we can do a combined protest in Greensboro. With only a week's notice, I think it will be difficult to get a crowd at Winston-Salem's City Hall by next Saturday.

Activists are already organizing protests in Raleigh and Charlotte.

There is nothing much going on in Sacramento, the capitol of CA. Strange. Any ideas on getting people together for some protesting??? I'm going to get the word out to others and maybe it will spread. It's too late to get out an ad in our local GLBT rag, but maybe if I call everyone, we can get a decent crowd. Tomorrow nite in LA there will be a protest at Rick Warren's church. I would love to do that at the local Sac churches.

Anyone in Northern CA who has ideas, wants to join, please contact me. Send a PM and I"ll send you my email address and phone #. Let's get something going at the state Capitol.

Also, after the president elect is in office, maybe we need to organize a huge march in DC????

WE CAN’T DO THIS ALONE! WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need organizers in every major city to work with us and get out the protest! I know you’re all tired from all of the work you’ve done for this great election year, but I’m asking for one more push! Let the country hear our voices together. Let them see that we are a strong, adamant, and powerful community that deserves equal rights, and CAN’T BE DEFEATED!

T, if you want to publicize an event you have planned in the local LGBT media, it may not be too late. Many magazines have websites and online calendars. If someone at one of those mags likes your event, they might post it online for you.

What local organizations are you plugged into? They should all have email lists. If an event gets planned, they can send an announcement to all their members.

Don't forget the campus LGBT groups.

Key -- if you can find just ONE local activist who has a track record of making things happen, plug your event to him/her and let them take charge.

It bothers me that we don't know.

And yes, local leadership is absolutely critical.

Good question Zerbie. When I first looked at the sight I assumed it was from "Equality Action Now" out of California. But now I'm not so sure. "Equality Action" may be only a link."

I read that Detroit, Michigan is involved, at Cobo Hall, not a good area at all. Crime ridden actually but I think it will be a hit here because everything is gay in Detroit, it has a very vibrant community. Also, the Triangle Foundation is stationed there. Checking into the one here in Grand Rapids Area/East Town.

I'm a total newb to protesting etal.

One of the things that attracts me to Soulforce is the precepts of nvcd. When hearing of protests and such sponsored by other organziations, how can one ensure than the principals of non-violence will be followed?

I guess there is no way to know if there will be non-violent demonstrations. I mean, I have been following the story in CA and a few arms have been broken and a black eye or two was had from my understanding. My wife said it's going to get nasty, it has not even started. I have to agree with her. I would be shocked if a few buildings don't get vandilized along the way.

We at Soulforce can perpetuate non-violence but sometimes, (and I am not advocating violence here), just sometimes, you can't turn the other cheek and walk away quietly and peacefully. Sometimes to get the attention it deserves it needs a bit of violence to get things moving. Would anyone have paid as much attention to the Rodney King beating if not for the violence that errupted about it in the black community? It was not right to be violent, but sadly, this society in general pays more attention to such things.

There has been talk here, in the community around MI, about the need to not be so nice about it all. Not to just hide with our tails between our legs and go back into the closet. Is this a viable answer? I am not sure. It's sad to have to resort to it in my book, I personally don't believe in violence except as a last resort or for self-defense. Does this stealing of our rights to be human and love qualify as a last resort and self defense? I am still trying to figue it all out inside myself at this point. What lengths I am willing to go through to protect myself, my wife, my family.

After all, anyone only has but 4 cheeks.:'(

Hi Beats

THanks for the link. Can you post here if you hear of something in Sac for Saturday the 15th? There are marches planned in southern CA and SF, but I've heard nothing of Sacramento.

I think we need to plan a statewide march on the Capitol. We need to do this before the CA Supreme Court gets the case and makes a decision on whether or not to hear it. We need to make our voices heard before the Court gets the legal arguments in hand.

The domain registry info for jointheimpact.com lists a woman from Seattle, WA as the registrant and admin/tech contact. i agree that transparency is a good quality for the organizers to establish up front.

There are a couple of folks in Albuquerque who sound like they're going to take on the leadership of organizing a protest in New Mexico, but the details are still sketchy. i'll likely be able to confirm more by mid-week.

Find out who is organizing the protest - it will be either an individual or an organization with a few individuals as the main organizers.

Contact the organizer, ask them the goal of their protest and ask them what the message is. What they then say will tell you a lot and you can make your mind up from there.

I have no desire to join an out of control mob or associate myself with people screaming invective at strangers. I check out the message of events beforehand, then stay aware while I'm participating. If things start going a way that doesn't resonate with me, it's not hard to quietly walk off and head home. And btw, that hasn't happened for me yet. The worst was a protest where one individual kept screaming insults at the people inside an ex-gay conference as they came and left via the parking lot. I just moved to the complete opposite side of the group from him. But had there been more than just that one guy behaving that way, I would have left.

.:'(

No.
Let's be clear - physical violence only makes sense in self-defense situations (or defending a child, that sort of thing.)

Taking on NVCD is even harder because if you are part of a NVCD protest, violence might be taken against you, but you dilute the cause if you defend yourself. For a brief crash-course in how it works and why, go rent the Richard Attenborough movie "Gandhi" and pay particular attention to the violence massacre and the violence of the British police against the unarmed marchers. The contrast between the behavior of the protesters and the behavior of the British was what won India independence.

No, we cannot play nice and quietly accept defeat on Prop 8. But that doesn't mean to respond ineffectively either, and violence is decidedly ineffective.

But let's be clear: all the violence I have heard reported from the CA protests was waged AGAINST protesters allegedly by police and by mormons. THAT in itself should be getting attention and speaking volumes to the rest of the country. But if we start getting violent, then it just becomes a brawl and we all look nuts.

There was a protest this week in the Los Angeles area, and it was reported to be around 10,000 people. There were very few incidents reported, although I believe a couple of complaints were voiced of incidents initiated by the Yes on 8 folks there. A news station video clip showed a Yes on 8 person carrying a huge wooden or cardboard sign (couldn't tell) in the shape of a cross, and she was batting the protesters signs down with it. The protesters got tired of that, and a few batted her sign (cross) down with their signs. That's about all I've seen or heard about the protests from the "No" point of view.

I agree, we have to find a happy medium between firm and staying away from any form of violence. If we just keep it focused on the action (Prop 8) and not on the voters, we can keep it from becoming personal, at least from our side.

Here are some names and contacts of some activists that I found in this area. They are the only ones that I can think of that can help or give us more leads.

Addison Ore- She is the director of Triad Health Project here in GSO. She also writes an LGBT column for the local paper. www.vaore@aol.com

Guilford Green Foundation- www.ggfnc.org or 336-790-8419

Matthew Comer- Editor (I think!) at www.interstateq.com His direct email is matt@interstateq.com phone number is 336-391-9528

I got all this info off these websites so I think it is ok to post them here. I wasn't sure what calls you have made or plans that are underway, but if you need help, let me know!

Don't worry too much, in my experience there isn't much that happens at the capitals... at least in Washington and California.

There is one in Seattle, but I won't be able to go. However, my heart will be with the event and those attending it. I would go, if I could find someone to go with; you know, the safety thing.:dove:

At the bottom of the page it says "Powered by PressRow", does that answer the question? I don't know what that is... so I don't know.

There is going to be a protest at the Houston City Hall, and today I emailed HRC, PFLAG, Equality Texas, Houston Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, and Atticus Circle. Haven't gotten a reply, but I did reach the local organizer here and he is trying to get in touch with these people as well. I need to email OUTSmart, the gay and lesbian magazine here in Houston. So hopefully, it will turn out good. I hope this isn't too short a notice.

I noticed one thing that is sorely lacking is a unified resistance to this crappy legislation. Back in the 60's, the African Americans were united under one cause. If we could get all gays and lesbians off their asses, and unite for this, we could really make an impact. I know many are off their asses, but there could be more...

Christine,

There is a protest planned for Greensboro for this Saturday. The organizer is Mike Gilbert. Here are the details so far. Below info is from the "Join the Impact" website:

Rick

This is a NATION-WIDE protest! www.jointheimpact.wetpaint.com

At 1:30pm EST, across the country, people will protest Prop 8 and what it stands for. Join the fight!

If you know me and are wondering why someone in charge of a Christian-based theatre company is organizing a protest for gay rights, it's because I'm gay and I'm in love. Now that that's out of the way...

On Saturday, November 15, we will be gathering in Downtown Greensboro (possibly at the Melvin Municipal Building at 300 Washington Street) to protest in the name of Gay Rights and Equality.

This protest will be for everyone (gay/straight/bisexual/etc.). I've contacted Triad Pride in hopes they will help us (if anyone has any personal/professional contacts, could you get them on board?) I'm hoping they will back to us on this and help us get permits for a PEACEFUL (get that, PEACEFUL) protest.

If all else fails, we may have to consider joining the Charlotte or Raleigh protests. I'll keep you updated on this.

Regardless of what happens, make your sign and bring your voice.

ALSO: INVITE EVERYONE YOU CAN!!!

For anyone interested:

Saturday, November 15th 1030a - 3p

Non-violent protest (jointheimpact.com)

Bring everyone you can! Make a sign! If you can't come, send 5 people in your place (and tell them to bring everyone). Let's make an impact!

Now, do any of you have an idea for a really great sign (or two)?

The Albuquerque, NM demonstration as part of the national protest will be this Saturday, 11/15/08 at 11:30am Mountain time at the Albuquerque City Hall, 1 Civic Plaza, downtown Albuquerque. That's at the corner of Third Street & Tijeras. Parking downtown can be a pain, so carpooling or using public transit is suggested. Bring a lunch & plenty to drink - we may be there a while! Local event updates will be posted at the Common Bond NM Foundation's website (http://commonbondnm.org/cms/node/63).

i've been focusing on sending notices to local LGBT supportive faith communities, hoping for the attendance of clergy & religious allies in the area.

Some signs I saw in Phoenix last night:

Love Is Love
Support Love
Equality Now
Honk for Equality
Civil Rights
Keep Church and State Separate
Why Do I Have More Rights Than My Gay Friends?
Gay Rights are Human Rights
Equality is Sexy
Stop the LDS
Love 4 All

Say, what do you all think?
I'm thinking about what sign to make for Saturday, and considering maybe on one side:
Say Yes To Love,
and on the other side:
Equal Marriage Now

What do y'all think?

That's perfect Z. Awesome. Thanks for the ideas, I'm going to keep brainstorming. I've got to make 1 sign for me and 1 for my wife. And possibly more if I can get others to join in. I'm just jazzed there is finally an official Sacramento action. Otherwise, I was thinking of coming to Phoenix a little earlier than planned!

BTW - hubby wants his sign to tackle the issue of hypocrisy coming from the Mormon church.

Heh, I'm trying to think of a 3-6 word sign to address how far the hurt this has caused has spread. It's no secret that racism isn't exactly "over" in society at large, and that it's no different in the gay community and often in "the movement". But this, and some people's analysis of the voting turnout have lit it on fire, and that's terrifying to me.

"America voted for CHANGE and all i got was this lousy amendment taking away my right to marry!"

Also read yesterday several articles predicting that the CA Supremes may rule quickly on Prop 8 - possibly even by the end of this week. Yes, our local media keeps reporting that 'legal experts' predict the state Supreme Court will not rule on the matter since the voters passed it, but no actual legal experts are quoted. I've heard (CNN, MSNBC) a bare few make that statement but they were advocating on behalf of Prop 8. And then I wonder, when reading their May 2008 ruling, how could they let this fly when it goes against everything in the words of the May ruling? I guess we just have to wait and see on this one.

Meanwhile, I'll keep biting my nails and looking into some possible therapy sessions.

Ok, have to say I love the "chickens 1, gays 0" sign. It's a joke here in northern CA. Our local paper had a cartoon showing a few chickens outside a cage, and two gay men in tuxedos inside the gage. "Chickens have rights" (Prop 2 passed by a wide margin)

I've been enjoying telling people: It's official, California chickens now have more rights than gays.

I like the one saying "Mormon church - wrong and unfair" but it's probably not all that strong.

I think a sign that said "NEXT, YOUR MARRIAGE" so they don't foget that just some day our children will vote and they may be the minorities.......

Heres a light at the end of the tunnel....Jesters class had an election and they set up a mock senate, congress and house. They are adopting bills and laws currently. Two kids wrote a bill to pass for LGBT rights, one for just gay marriage, and the one Jester wrote as comprehensive one about all different rights, adoption and stuff. Her bill got voted into law by a landslide! These are Juniors in HIghschool, not to much longer and they will be voting citizens. We will prevail!!!!

How about:

"Today my marriage, tomorrow your Bible"

Doesn't explain the point of them voting to use the constitution to discriminate - meaning, their rights could also end up in jeopardy because they set a precedence for eliminating rights based on a very minor majority of voters. The phrase doesn't explain the meaning, and it would probably do more to incense the nut cases into crying gays are taking away our religion.

Oh well, it makes me laugh when I think of it.

The phrase doesn't explain the meaning, and it would probably do more to incense the nut cases into crying gays are taking away our religion.

Oh well, it makes me laugh when I think of it.

:lol::lol::lol::lol: How about "God made rainbows" to remind them he/she made us too and s/he don't make junk! we could hold up rainbow painted Bibles.......:lol:

That reminds me. During the marching season, I pointed out a rather large rainbow arching over the school to my best friend Kristina and said "If God hates gays, why do we have rainbows?" She wholeheartedly agreed. :) And yes, my school is very open. :D We have a lot of gay kids and a lot of minorities, along with lots of immigrants and exchange kids, so we're pretty liberal.

And actually mom, that was my friend Mike who wrote the Gay rights bill and it passed by a landslide. I wrote the one about scientific funding for stem cell research. Which also passed by a landslide. :D

Sounds like a sign to me! Actually it would be a great sign to have when that sick man Phelps(is that his name?) protests at graves and such blaming gay people for everything. I really like the one I read that said "Erase the Hate, overturn 8". To the point. I have been trying to get the communty together here, but unfortunately, I have not heard back from anyone yet, and time grows short. I want to put a sign in my window for Saturday so I do my part at least.

Oh, and I stand corrected on the bill in class.......

Here in Sac, the yes on 8 people are crying about how the horrible gay people stole their rainbows and now they are too ashamed to hang rainbows around their house. We stole the word gay too and now are trying to steal marriage. Ok, most of what I hear and read pisses me off, but when I read about how we 'stole' their special words (like any of them used it before us anyway), it makes me laugh. Sort of like the bickering and fighting in elementary school.

6-8-78 might mean June 8th, 1978.

On June 8th, 1978 the Mormon Church extended to male members of African descent the right to become priests in the church.

I'm not sure if that's what the sign was referring to.

Wow. That really takes me back. I've been to several LGBT protests at the Government Center In Minneapolis many years ago. In fact, I even gave a speech at one in 1982. I still have that speech on cassette tape around here somewhere.

I wish I could be there with y'all. :)

So does that mean we'll all be out at the same time (not by our clocks but in real time)? If so, how cool is that???!!! Oh BruceChris, how wonderful that is going to be!!! Almost like 3D but all over the country. Yes, lets give 'em hell, together!

We'll definitely have some stories to share that evening.

Jackson, MS wasn't on the original list posted at the start of this thread, but let it be known- we're having a protest on the steps of the State Capitol! I know myself and several other students from Mississippi College will be attending.

Bruce, I wish I had known you back when I lived in Minnesota. I love your sense of humor and you would have been cool to hang out with. But, it seems that in one of your posts you mentioned that you lived in Madison, Wisconsin in the Seventies so I think we were in different places during that time.

You also mentioned that you worked for Rep. Karen Clark. I did not know Karen personally, but she did meet with me and my partner briefly during the police brutality case that happened outside the Y'all Come Back Saloon in 1982. She was very helpful.

I hope the protest Saturday in Minneapolis has a huge turnout. Take some photos. :)

Yep, the protests are all at the same time.

I thought of a sign that would be great for an active Mormon to carry if they wanted to protest the actions of their leadership:

I'm Mormon and I support equality
Then there could be something written on the back complaining about the hypocrisy of the leadership.

I wouldn't use "Today my rights, tomorrow your marriage/Bible," because while we understand it means that any group could be victimized in this way, it's just going to look to many people like a threat.

I would go with: Whose rights will be taken away next??? :(

So awesome:
My husband and I were planning to attend the protest in San Francisco, but now we find protests are being planned all over the place, including our city. Sorry SF but have to keep it local!
Even cooler is my sister is allowing my 13 year old niece and her boyfriend to attend with us; her generation really needs to be aware of this.
Earlier in the week a group of sophomores from one of the high schools did a march and protest downtown.
Perhaps the passage of prop 8 is a positive after-all. I don't know where all this support was prior to Nov 4, but it seems to be contagious. I really hope that the other states will have positive repercussions from all this as well.

:'(I am not too sure much is going to happen in MI on Saturday. People are afraid for their jobs here, there is no protection for you if you are gay. You can still be fired for it. So, I don't know if that is why no one is getting back to me and a planned rally at Lansing on the State Capitol steps, but I think that may have something to do with it.:'(

We are having a sign making party on Sat am at a friends art studio downtown.

Thanks to Jester....my sign will say..."IF GOD HATES GAYS WHY DID HE MAKE RAINBOWS?!"

My other one will say..."Yes 2 love...No to H8!"

I am still trying to convince my 15 year old daughter to make a sign that says "I LOVE MY GAY MOM!" She is not exactly sure about all that, but I think she is coming and I am excited about that!!

Pics to come I'm sure! Look for me Rick and I will be looking for you!

So far I like "Yes to love, no to H8" the best as far as getting my point across Saturday. I've seen that one several times. My personal favorite is Chickens: 1, Gays: 0, but it's not going to be too effective for a protest. Cute though (and accurate).

I'm going to keep looking, I may come across something unique and useful and then I have to think of something for my wife's sign. I'm making her come with me (it's more pleasant than being mad because she isn't there!).

Great sign, guys!

I think we will be using: Gay Rights Are Human Rights (for hubby)

and a double-sided sign for me: Love Thy Neighbor/Equal Rights Now

BTW - there is so much momentum about tomorrow's protest in Phoenix - I've never heard this much buzz over a rally before. I hope it's as big as it feels like it's going to be!

Just got an email from the Triangle Foundation! 5 cities are planning a peacefull protest Sat! Huray!!!! Mine Included. East Lansing and Kalamazoo, Detroit and Manistee(small city!) Ellie and I are going, but it is at night here, a candle light peaceful vigil. We are bringing a candel and a sign, maybe "All families are equal" or "All we need is love" or how about (LENNONish) "Imagine all the people, equal" It's suppost to rain with a snow mix, so it will be cold, we are hot tubbing afterwards and becoming part of history!

Gosh Tymejumper, I like that:

Imagine all the people, equal

That's great!

Still trying to figure out what my sign will say - it will be bordered in rainbows top & bottom, and the back will say "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." Still trying to figure out the front. But I really love yours, may use it. Hope you don't mind. ;)

We have all the supplies. I'm cooking dinner and after we'll get on to our sign project. Has to dry before the morn!!!

Ok everyone. For those participating tomorrow (jointheimpact), we'll be one in spirit. I'm so looking forward to it, will take pictures and be thinking of you all as my wife & I are standing up in Sacramento.

I like that sign idea, too.

We finalized ours. Changed ideas again.

Now, both signs are double sided. Hubby's says "Value ALL Families" on one side and "Equal Rights NOW," on the other.

Mine says "Love = Family" on one side and "Gay Rights Are Human Rights" on the other.

We finished coloring them in tonight. We are so jazzed!
And I'm wearing a marriage equality button that someone gave me at our protest on Monday, so it prompted questions from our friends tonight at dinner, so we were able to tell them about Prop 8 and Prop 102 and what it all means, and why we're protesting and demanding equality for all.

So psyched. :)

Awesome Zerbie! We are painting our signs right now. I'm going with Tymejumper's idea and the back will say what I mentioned in my last post. My wife's is: Love (with a heart) not H8
Full Equality for All (on the back)

Yeah!!! The rainbow will be complicated but I'm trying it anyway!

I've got my sign done. It says, "Liberty and Justice for ALL!" in red, white, and blue. But they're forecasting rain here for tomorrow. So I'm glad I made my sign with waterproof markers.

I hope the rain doesn't keep the protesters away. But regardless, I'll be there even if I'm the only one standing there.... with my sign that says, "Liberty and Justice for ALL!"

And people will drive by and say, "Hey kids. Look at the crazy man with the sign."

They say:

Civil Rights are Family Values

Focus on Your Own Family

God is an Equal Opportunity Lover

Hate is Not a Family Value

Homophobia - Now That's a Choice

Live and Let Love

We the People - that means all of us

Will Work for Equal Rights

The majority cannot speak for a minority

I LOVE that sign,! Not sure how much will show up at night, in the dark at a candle vigil, but I am using a white backgroud and black marker. Rain and snow in the forcast, so I am wrapping my sign in plastic wrap. That will keep it dry! If there is wet in your area, try it to keep it from running.

I was all fretting about what to put on my sign but it kinda just hit me walking back from an event last night. I won't claim it's original (it might be, but it might not be) but my signs are below. I did water colors last night cause a friend suggested crayon might be tacky; the oil pastel from this morning is here too.
