Recently I have been called Kat, and I now can't seem to break those friends' habits.:p
My sister dated a girl for over a year, and I was the only one in my family who supported where her heart led her. I felt close to tears so many times with how horribly they treated her after my mom and stepdad found out.:'(
One of my best friends will be kicked out of his house on his 16th birthday (April 19, the National Day of Silence) for dating a boy. His parents found text message correspondence between him and his boyfriend and I could only hold him as he had to begin planning for a bleak future.:(
I could not stand idly by as this hatred and bigotry tore apart those that I love. With my own openness to either gender but a boy in my heart, I cannot help but feel an overpowering empathy for the plight of those in similar positions as those mentioned above and my own. I am in the process of pioneering a Gay/Straight Alliance at my high school. It will be one of the first in my state, and I can only hope that my own efforts to provide a safe haven for my fellow GLBT students will not be thwarted by a close-minded administration.
