On Sunday a group visited my church. They used to be called the Maine Christian Civic League; now they've changed their name. Too much bad press, maybe. They have a radically anti-gay agenda and their malice and judgmentalism, IMO, oozes from every pore. I left before their presentation. Instead, I posted the following blog on my personal MySpace, viewed by a number of congregants:
"When I was a kid we used to sing a little chorus in Sunday School. I suppose now it might be considered somewhat non-PC, but there's no missing the message about the inclusivity of God's love:
"Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world,
Red and yellow, black and white,
They are precious in His sight.
Jesus loves the little children of the world."
In those tempestuous days of the civil rights movement (mid 1960s) those words might well have been considered unduly "liberal," even by some Christians. We have, I trust, grown in grace and wisdom since then.
Today I made up a new verse to this old tune:
"Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world,
Any color, gay or straight,
He does not want us to hate.
Jesus loves the little children of the world."
Today I want to declare that I cannot, before God, and will not support any organization or group of Christians that seeks to create an American theocracy and to target another group by legislative means. Jesus said. "My kingdom is not of this world." We Christians have an explicit command from our Lord:"Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature." We have no business trying to build any other kingdom. "
