This may have been posted before, but just in case it has not, there is a new movie coming out (ahhhh pun) around December 5th about the first openly gay man elected to office. His name? Harvey Milk. He is played by Sean Penn and the rest of the cast looks great.

Check out the trailer:

So far it has a 100% on the tomatometer (with 8 critics, lol)

Going to go see it? Hyped up about it? The next Brokeback Mountain?

I've been really looking forward to this movie coming out especially since I was involved in the gay rights movement during that period. Also because I spent a big part of the summer of 1978 in San Francisco on Castro Street during the campaign against the Briggs initiative. Apparently the movie studio re-made Castro street to look exactly as it did in 1978 so it will be nostalgic to see Castro again as it was back then.

Harvey Milk was killed less than two months after I flew back to Minneapolis in September 1978. In fact he was assassinated exactly 30 years ago on November 27th, 1978. It's hard to believe it has been that long ago.

Josh Brolin (who plays Dan White in the movie) was on Jay Leno tonight and talked about how the passing of prop 8 three weeks ago has set human rights back 30 years. Jay Leno said the movie was outstanding and suggested it was Oscar worthy.

The year 1978 was a very memorable year for LGBT rights in America, just as 2008 will be years from now.

The movie coming out now is perfect timing with all the protests going on in California and across the country. It may help inspire some who have not yet done so to come out and fight.

Out of the closet and into the streets!!

I'm very much looking forward to seeing Milk in a theater (near me). I read a review at CNN.com and an article in today's SFGate.com (Chronicle). The reviews are glowing. It's going to be a great article. I didn't realize that Diane Feinstein was the one who found them dead.

Yes, this is great timing for California. And the nation. Especially in light of Prop 8, Prop 102, Prop 2 and the protests. I've ordered some rainbow magnets to put on my car, patches to sew on my backpack and a mouse pad for work. I'm putting my warrior gear on and I'm going to battle (of course in the most non-violent way I can muster up). Another protest day after Thanksgiving too!!! :rainbow::weee::tup::applause:

I saw a documentary about Harvey Milk in a Sociology class during my last year of university, back in 1990. His story blew me away. Harvey must have been a really great city councillor. You know the old saying about how if you're a woman, you have to be twice as good as the male candidates? Well, I guess if you're gay, you have to be 4 times as good.

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

With a hundred reviews in, it's still sitting at 93%, and at least a few of those are only negative in that they complain that the movie should've been made sooner.

Real audio from the real Harvey Milk:

I went to see Milk tonight. Wow. It's a powerful and moving movie. Shawn Penn did a great job portraying Harvey Milk.

The movie was superb, but not 100% factual. Robert Hillsborough was murdered in 1977, not 1973 as in the movie. And there was no giant rainbow flag draped on the front of San Francisco City Hall when Milk gave his Gay Freedom Day speech in 1978. Other than that, the film seemed on the mark.

The movie brought back a lot of memories of that emotional period. As I was driving home from the theater I found it hard to believe that thirty years have already passed since all that happened.

Time is fleeting.

We saw a late showing of Milk last Friday. Amazing film. My partner lived in the Castro back then and was deeply affected by watching the movie (as were we all.) Afterward, he too kept saying that he couldn't believe thirty years had passed. Penn was amazing.
