I am always very interested in fresh artists in music and I thought I'd make a thread where we could all post our current favorites and oldies but goodies. :)

I'll start.

Right now...I'm in LOVE with this song "Soon We'll Be Found" by an artist called Sia.

I'm very interested to see what everyone is into right now! :D

I have been really into this group for a while now. They are a German band called Tokio Hotel. I first heard this song "Rette Mich (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZrqGS0N6Uk)" (English version "Rescue Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWKSSq1RcZo)") a while ago and just loved the hauntingly romantic sounds of it. Started looking around for some more of their music and just fell in love with it.

Check em out. The English version of the video is the German video overdubbed with the English lyrics. They did release their first album in English about a year and a half ago.

I just got to see Hawksley Workman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHlX-WL-M_4) in concert here, which was very exciting. He gets no radio play in the States, so people just kind of find out about him and follow shows appearantly: we were talking to people in line, and there were more people from out of state than there were locals.

Discovered Matt Alber, a singer from California (by way of Kansas), last night. His first album, Hide Nothing, is fantastic. Oh, and he's gay.

The video for End of the World was released a few weeks ago. It's fantastic.

Matt- thanks for posting this! Love End of the World, Matt's blog and his tale about going to a party for Gus Van Sant.

It's unusual for a singer to bridge vocal styles so successfuly, but Mr. Alber does, with aplomb. And you know what? I may live, teach and breath classcial singing, but I like Matt's contemporary stuff more. Maybe it's because his personality and creativity (he writes his own material) shines through so much brighter. His voice almost keens it's way into your heart. Great stuff.

Ooh! I binged on the Sia album for about a month. Now I'm really liking Imogen Heap.

I've recently listened to the TingTings a bit but I need to listen to their full album. I do like Adele :) I will definitely check out the others you've listed! I love new music :D

Very interesting. In the Handl piece, the qualities of Matt's voice are nearly identical to Alfred's, at least to my untrained ears. In the other song, however, Matt's voice is quite different. So, a question for the unititiated:

Does "countertenor" refer to the fact that they sing higher than a tenor, or does iot refer to their range? It seems Matt has quite a range.

I found this artist, Rachelle, after watching a movie I didn't particularly care for. The song "Everything I Know" played over the credits, and I found I liked the rest of her music too.

As I said on my blog: "She sounds like Nina Person from the Cartigans...just a melty drippy dreamy voice that makes you want to soak into everything around you..."

A countertenor is a male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of a contralto, mezzo-soprano or (less frequently) a soprano, usually through use of falsetto, or more rarely the normal or modal voice. A pre-pubescent male who has this ability is called a treble. This term is used exclusively in the context of the classical vocal tradition, although numerous popular music artists also prefer employing falsetto. The term first came into use in England during the mid 17th century and was in wide use by the late 17th century. During the Romantic period, the popularity of the countertenor voice waned and few compositions were written with that voice type in mind. In the second half of the 20th century, the countertenor voice went through a massive resurgence in popularity, partly due to pioneers such as Alfred Deller, by the increased popularity of Baroque opera and the need of male singers to replace the castrati roles in such works. Although the voice has been considered largely an early music phenomenon, there is a growing modern repertoire.

The entry doesn't mention that this voice type is an imitation of the Castrato voice. And that was a very different voice! Men with the unchanged voices and the bodies of men.

Countertenor's primarily sang church music in men and boy's choirs. Veddy English.

Counter also means against. And PDQ Bach (a classical music humorist) went so far as to call the voice "bargain basement countertenor'. ;) :lol:

What's really going on it that to be a countertenor means that a man is singing in a highly developed falsetto. It is higher that a tenor's voice. An octave, actually.

What is falsetto? It is when the vocal folds are approximating in length, but not depth.

Matt has more of an soprano sounding voice. He sings notes that are higher than Deller's. Lower too. One hears him go into his tenor sounding voice -chestvoice- at the very bottom of his range. He does it artfully though, making it still sound 'heady'. He displays a wider range.

:) I like Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. "Don't Stop" is my top favorite Fleetwood Mac song because it is very upbeat and reminds you to keep looking forward to a fresh, new day, no matter how bad things get or how bad you think your life is. "Sweet Girl" is my favorite Stevie Nicks song. I dedicated it to a very close friend of mine. But from Stevie's solo albums, I think I like "Planets Of The Universe" from "Trouble In Shangri-La" the best, because it's about an intense argument and love/hate relationship she had with fellow bandmate and former lover Lindsey Buckingham. I still believe, to this very day, that both Stevie and Lindsey are still hot for each other (which probably explains the constant bickering they did backstage during their "Say You Will" tour six years ago), but are frustrated because now that Lindsey has a wife and kids, they can't have each other anymore. I've seen two Stevie Nicks concerts in my life so far, and during both shows, she seemed totally obsessed with Lindsey and was acting as if she couldn't stop thinking about him. ;)
