Stan Lee's Gay Superhero

Comic book superstar Stan Lee has announced that an hour long TV production is in the works here in the US for his latest superhero. This one is special, he is gay.

SPIDER-MAN creator Stan Lee is to unveil the world’s first gay superhero.

High school basketball star Thom Creed hides his developing superpowers along with his sexuality.

Former Marvel Comics boss Stan, 86 — who also created the Hulk and the X-Men — will unleash the character in an hour-long TV drama being shot in the US.

If it’s a hit there it will cross to the UK.

TV execs hope it will rival the huge success of shows likes Heroes.

Lee developed the idea of a gay character from the award-winning novel Hero by Perry Moore.

A TV insider said: “It was only a matter of time before we had our first gay superhero. And if there is one man who can make him a success it is Stan Lee.

“There’s a real buzz among comic book fans.”

Leave it to Stan Lee. Although the title of the "first gay superhero" I don't think goes to this one. I mean, come on...BATMAN. An older guy running around with a young hottie. Most would call that a "daddy and his twink".

Whoa! THat's Perry Moore's character! :D From the novel "Hero". I'll admit, not terribly original by way of plot (major chunks of it smelled of Watchmen to me) but the characters are all pretty awesome.

Only Ultimate Colossus is gay ::geek alert:: Which was cool and all until that hot mess with the drug overdosing: eek.

Everyone seems to be overlooking the obvious one Wonderwoman. I mean look at the place she grew up, where there were ONLY women. They were amazon warrior women, and the universal lesbian sign is the Labrys(i think i spelled it right)I never did see her have a boyfriend and was really not interested in men in the comics.

I think it's safe to say that he's not, by any stretch of the imagination, "The first gay superhero". It might be the first gay superhero narrative. I'm under the impression that most of the names that have come up tended to be written by straight people, and their narrative was generally "Oh, hey, normal superhero woes and also I'm gay and my teammates are dealing with that". Thom's story deals with closet issues, worries about his father's response, guilt etc. Also, he might qualify for "first YOUNG gay (out) superhero".

Not really. Wiccan from the Young Avengers is gay and dating another young male superhero, the one thing that is definite here is that he will be the first superhero whose homosexual orientation is a central plot point and who is a central character. So he is perhaps the first "gay superhero" rather than the first superhero who happens to be gay.

I'm excited, because it's progressive, and yet I'm still wanting more. I'd much rather see a transgender hero to be honest, because that's a subject that the gay community is still out to lunch on. There aren't a lot of transgender celebrities, really, besides Eddie Izzard we've got nothing.
