We've all heard that line before, "It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!"
But what does it mean? Does it mean that straight people are the ones who caused the downfall of mankind?

It means that this statement has- as its basis- a literal view of scripture. As such, it's a strawman's argument, set up to propaganize a predetermined conclusion.

I think you might have point here. It was a straight couple that got us into all this mess.
But we must not forget about the snake. The real question is: Was it a gay snake or a straight snake? :D
...and I think I had best be leaving...

The statement means that the first couple was a guy and a girl- not a guy and a guy. This is a rather vague argument. Taken at value, it really doesn't say anything much more than just that. However, some like to jump to conclusions and say it somehow condemns gay relationships.
Perhaps they see this as God's plan because this was how things were at the very beginning. I'm curious, does that mean we should run around naked because that was, using the logic that literal Christians use, God's plan?

and let's not forget what the Bible says about Adam and the animals:
Genesis 2:18-20 Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him." Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
so it certainly sounds like God's plan for MAN was that he'd pick out one of the animals and marry it! oh the fun of reading scripture literally!

Also, if Adam and Eve are representative of God’s standard for marriage, then incest must be God’s standard for procreation.
