Thoughts about the recession....

The thread Love and Money: Valentine's Day (http://www.soulforce.org/forums/showthread.php?p=67041#post67041), got me thinking about it.

Is it possible that the recession will be good for us? Think about the way that it is testing relationships. I think perhaps the recession gives people a chance to remember what's really important. When there isn't much money, people find other ways to be 'happy'. They are reminded that money never did but happiness.

Yes, that's possible. Adversity often has things to teach and remind us if we are open to learning and remembering. One of the secrets to getting smarter as you get older is learning to be open to the lessons that adversity teaches.

This doesn't mean that adversity doesn't suck. it does. It just means that good can come of it if you are looking for it. God also has a way of lurking about in the midst of difficult times waiting to give us a leg up into new insights.

Adversity will come. It's how a person handles it. Can they see what's really important? Will they look to God for guidance? Will they keep their outlook positive or will they fold up the tent and quit? Adversity is hard but it can teach us what is really important.

Well... we have learned that the economy was entirely supported by consumers spending money they didn't have for things they didn't need. Perhaps now that that house of cards has collapsed we can build an economy built on something more substantial?

Yes, hopefully leaving beyond our means will be a bit more controlled. There is a lot of crazy spending that does on in this world.

I'd like to be hopeful, but our university announced it has had to let go a number of employees: janitors, non-tenured faculty... the awesome professor who teaches my Chaucer class is looking for another job... this really sucks.

Oh, that's nothing! It's lasted what -- 6 years? So what? Next year's budget is now proposed as $3.55 Trillion dollars. That's American dollars, not Zimbabwe dollars. I hope the distinction still means something in the future.

The idiot I heard on NBC Nightly News said the Treasury isn't printing money. But in fact, the Federal Reserve has said it might buy Treasuries. Which would mean printing money, or at least calling it into existence electronically. So God isn't alone in His ability to create ex nihilo.
