Rats.

The rainbow equality wristband I've been wearing every day snapped in half and fell to the floor. It's officially dead. :(

Since it came to me free by chance, I don't know where to find a replacement (I saw a stranger wearing it and said, "Hey I want a rainbow equality bracelet, where'd ya get it? And he just said "I have another in the car, here." And that's how I acquired the one that just ceased to be.)

Since the marriage button I was wearing has also deceased (looked down one day and noticed it was no longer there), I haven't got any pride paraphernalia to wear. :(

And since I am cheap when it comes to little pieces of plastic, I really don't feel like paying $5 for a wristband PLUS $5 for shipping to order one online.

Any brilliant, miserly cheap suggestions on replacing this stuff? Like, the kind of store to try looking for in town that might sell these things? Far as I can tell, there is no gay bookstore in the valley (I might be wrong, hey, so if there are any Zoni's here to tell me wrong, please speak up!)

:D Ideas at the craft store, if you're crafty:lol: :
- Buy a cheap children's beading set, and bead your own personal rainbow bracelet, necklace (see the necklave worn by Haven in the Equality Ride for a great example!), anklet, or even earrings!
- Use those beads to make something to hang off your keychain.
- Put tiny beads on a safety pin and attach wherever!
- Buy rainbow ribbon, cut a piece off, and safety-pin it wherever you like! (Thanks for the idea, Vanessa!!)
- Use that ribbon for other things. Wrap it around the steering wheel of your car, or tie a strip to fly in the wind on your car antenna.
- Get the little squeezable acrylic paints (less than a dollar each usually) and you can paint rainbows on any fabric surface! I use these to decorate the would-be-boring purses I buy from walmart for super-cheap, but you can decorate anything fabric with them.
- Use a paint brush with the paint from those squeezables to paint over a unicolored bead bracelet if you already have a boring one.
- Also at the craft store, they sell rainbow fabric bandannas that you can either wear as-is or cut up for any number of things.
If you're into crafty rainbow things, send me a message - I have more that require more input and/or skill if you're interested.

Look in any store (even the craft one!) for children's items with rainbows. There are plenty!

If you have a store called "Hot Topic" near you, chances are that it sells some rainbow or GLBT stuff. So does a store called "Spencers" I recently saw some cute stick-on earrings at Walmart with all sorts of rainbows on them - they can be used for anything, though, not jsut earrings.

Or how 'bout coloring some string with the markers and then weaving them into a bracelet? (Might want to soak it after coloring if you sweat a lot :D)

Those are some pretty nifty ideas Mia. We've got a Michael's down here, If I'd known about a place like that when I was a kid I would have had a happy childhood, now I don't have time (to be happy that is :lol:)

i admit it. i can be crafty, and for the past few years I've made my own rainbow bracelets and anklets and necklaces.......

one year I bought some hemp and some rainbow crochet thread. I wrapped the hemp very much like the "hair wraps" they do at the beach or at theme parks. it looked great. I can also do a wicked "friendship" bracelet in rainbow colors pretty quickly. I don't know why, but when summer comes around, I need things hanging all over my body.

So, I never was "crafty" in that sense, tho I can do a mean counted cross stitch if you give me enough years to get thru a project. Heheh.

I find it difficult to make myself learn how to make things, but I'll keep your suggestions in mind, Mia - and maybe give it a go this summer just for fun. I keep meaning to try new things, and beads sound like fun!

Meanwhile, $4 sounds about right for a plastic wristband if that includes shipping, so I will probably get one from that Gayintostraight website. I couldn't remember the name of their site - tho I thought I remembered something about rainbow wristbands being posted there. Thanks Jamie, that's just perfect. :rainbow:

Hey Dash - I totally made hook rugs when I was little. I made one a couple years ago too - blush - a Hello Kitty wall-hanging about 20 inches high. It's on the wall in the spare bedroom. I'll never forget the look on my husband's face when I told him, 'Hey sweetie, look! I just bought a Hello Kitty latch hook mat! I can't wait to make it." His entire face wrinkled, "A Hello? Kitty? Latch??? Hook???? Mat???? What on earth is that?"

Well, I've ever grown my own hemp, but it does sound intriguing :cool: , especiall with all the neat things you can make out of it (bracelets and all).

However, I'm slight embarrassed :o to admit back in the day (way back in the way back days) I did work on some hook rugs. But I dont remember ever finishing them. I'm like that, start and don't finish - on those types of projects. I used to attempt to crochet too and yup, you guessed it, never finished! Except for one potholder that I can't remember who I gave it too, back in high school.

Zerbie, does the web site for the rainbow bracelet give you an option on purchasing - I mean, do you have to go thru pay pal? I want to order one but not a paypal gal. :rolleyes:

Hmm, I will check the site again to see if maybe there is another payment option that I missed. Otherwise, maybe I can find one thru PFLAG.

As for that Hello Kitty latch hook - I was singing the Queen of the Night, and didn't want to spend the backstage time gabbing with the chorus and tiring my voice out, so I went into my dressing room, shut the door, and latch hooked my way through 3 performances of the Magic Flute. Needed something to do that didn't take too much conversation, and since I don't knit, the latch hooking solved that little boredom dilemma quite neatly.

I'm so with Tdogg about starting those kinds of projects and never finishing! Or in my case, I usually finish, but I take YEARS to complete something. Bought a small counted cross stitch pattern 3 years ago (maybe about 5 by 8 inches) and am still less than halfway through. Every few months I pick it up and stitch for an hour.

The record so far is an embroidered pillow (complete with French knots, rose and grape patterns, lace, yada yada yada) that I finally finished after. . .drum roll. . .12 YEARS. I'm so proud that it even got done. Finally. :lol:

Zerbie, I'm the same way with my crafts. I get all excited about them that I half-finish them and put them aside to finish "tomorrow", but wind up putting it off and eventually forgetting all about them. I've got half a dozen half-finished craft projects just begging to be done...

I'm the same way. I have a scarf that i'm knitting, I just learned how to knit, I taught myself, anyways, Its still there sitting there, I haven't worked on it in a few months. Maybe I'll finish it this summer.
