This past Friday I attended a gathering to listen to a speaker share about the student activism in the early years of the cilvil rights movement. A video was shown about how people in Mississippi and other Southern states were encouraged by other students to stand up and be part of the change of their condition.
During the question and answer session, the question of the relevance between that early activism and the students of today. I spoke with the gathering citing that in light of the economic conditions activism and volunteerism is needed now more than ever. I gave an overview of my volunteer activity that create a media that speaks to the concerns of poor and working people.
Last year I decided to speak out against injustice and discrimination of glbt people. Ever since then I have been doing it with more regularity. I think I mentioned that 2009 is a pivotal year for all of us. Events seem to confirm this. I want to be a part of that change.
