New billboard

A version of this billboard went up in our city recently. It's right by the interstate for everyone to see.

The one here says something about "equal rights." Archbishop Tutu has been a friend of glbt people and is one of the few African voices in the Anglican Communion to be heard on behalf of equal rights for gay people. The billboard is within a quarter mile of one of the gay bars in town. The bar flies a big old rainbow flag, which is also quite visible from the highway.

I haven't seen this particular billboard yet, but I've seen several billboards by the Foundation for a Better Life around my home town. I'm on their mailing list and receive daily emails of quotes about the values of honesty, integrity, trustworthiness, compassion, tolerance, friendship....stuff like that.

Believe it or not, I have seen this billboard for the past year or so in good ole Conroe, TX. Conroe is filled with backwoods rednecks (no offense redneck dyke) who would just as soon hang a person for being gay. I thought when I read it, how cool...in Texas of all places....

Archbishop Tutu has been an ally for at least 30 years. Longer than he has been an Archbishop in fact.

*looks at above post* Really? Wow, that's cool. I guess my circle of Christian influence just never thought about him any.

*Sigh* I guess I just wish some of the people I talk to could be less...harsh about the whole thing. I mean, I understand where they're coming from and all, given I used to be there myself. (Well, I was never harsh, because I knew I had lesbian inclinations. But I believed what they do at the time.) I just...really miss going to church and being part of their community, instead of seeing the looks and getting the veiled comments, and whatnot...that's what drove me from the Church.

I'm still the same person who led them in worship for three years and helped them move boxes and helped paint the church and cooked in their soup kitchen, dammit...
