Hello everyone. I'm new to this and this is my first post so I hope it's OK to ask for suggestions. On Saturday I'm going to be participating in a peaceful protest here in Dallas. We'll be protesting the First Baptist Church's day-long seminar to "cure" homosexuality. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what I could put on my sign. Something that is intelligent and not offensive. It's my first protest so I thought I'd ask for ideas. Thanks, Jason.

Hello and welcome! of course you can ask for suggestions! I bet you'll get loads of creative ideas in the coming days.

I've often thought if I were to participate in a protest like the one you describe, that I would want a sign reading something along the lines of: God loves us all, NO exceptions." It's a simple statement of belief (or, as I would say, fact), it's not offensive, it's not on the attack, and it's very gentle. That's the sort of attitude I would want to associate with.

We've been invited to a protest here in Arizona next week, against the extremist group sponsoring an anti-marriage amendment. My husband and I have thought about creating a sign that reads something along the lines of: Married. And AGAINST the PMA. (PMA = Protect Marriage Arizona). We want simple. Clear, and non attacking.

Meanwhile. I expect you'll get more ideas for yours from the rest of the bunch. Check back tomorrow!

Oh and Congratulations on attending your first protest, and welcome to the forums!!:)

Saturday...intelligent and not offensive...
Gosh darn dang! Day late, all sorts of short...(Not that any of these fit that criteria (you should see some of the ones I came up with when Phelps was in town.)
Oh well. had to share anyway...

1. The unrighteous, fornicators, Idolaters, adulterers,
sodomites, homosexuals, thieves, covetous,
drunkards, revilers, extortioners-- and those
who don't admit to being at least one.
Which closet you in?
2. Would I ruin Heaven for you?
3. Still a believer in spite of believers.
4. Repenting only made me gayer.
5. I prayed to change or die.
God said no.
Then apologized on your behalf.
6.So many issues
so few of us to
distract you from them
7. Go Feed the hungry,
I'm Full.
8. Thanks for your concern.
The feeling is mutual...
9. I forgive you. Not sure about God.
10. Sin hurts. I don't.
11. This hurts you
more than it hurts me.
12. Christian and Gay and
embarrassed of one.
13. If I'm sick, or deluded, possessed, or soulless,
and not as you say, evil,
that makes me innocent.
Whats your excuse?
14. I pray that you lead more to Christ
than you scare away
15. the Bible taught me
to use my brain too.
16. Think outside of the Books
17. Jesus didn't freak,
why do you?
18. I Pray you love me less.
19. What do people think about you,
thinking about us so much?
20. If I chose, so did you,
and you are Bi.
21. You're wasting your time,
I'm defending my Soul.
22. One more time, please...I'm lost.
Now, why did I choose this?
23. You worry about
the wrong souls
24.Pick a better battle

awediot, those are awesome. I think some of them are a bit more provoking than the previous list, but I still like them.

Hey, your #12 "Christian and Gay and embarrassed of one"- couldn't that be misconstrued that you are embarrassed of being gay instead of Christian? I was just thinking if I saw that on a sign or T-shirt or something, I would think which one is he embarrassed about?

Personally, as a lesbian Christian, I am embarrassed about being a Christian sometimes with its negative connotation to gays and lesbians, not to mention a lot of straight people. But I am not sure the general public would be so certain that being Christian is what you are embarrassed about, not being gay.

And Fred Phelps is a blithering moron. He speaks in half-truths or twisted truths at best. I am glad everyone sees him for what he is- an angry, pharisaical, bigoted man who is blinded by his own hatred. He is only worth being dismissed and put over in a corner out of sight.

Good list!

Thanks pnggrad79, I thought that myself and figured that the side of the street I was on would speak for itself. But in all honesty, depending on the topic, it could fit either way... Both sides have some things to think about.

But thats another thread...

Back in 1982 when I was still living in Minneapolis, Jerry Falwell came to town to hold a rally at the Minneapolis Auditorium for his Moral Majority. The gay community organized a protest outside the auditorium for the night of the rally. By the time people started arriving to enter the auditorium we had nearly 1,000 protesters lined up along the sidewalk.

My sign had a simple message, "Liberty and Justice for All." The protest made national news. My photo holding the sign ended up on the front page of the Milwaukee newspaper.
