View Full Version : What's in Your Closet?

I was just putting away the laundry, hanging up my shirts, and realized that one of my shirts, one that I really like, is at least 8 years old, maybe 10 years old. And I got to thinking about the stereotype of the gay man as a clothes horse (which we all know isn't true of every gay man!) then I wondered who else has something old but still stylish and functional in their wardrobe.

so confess: what is the oldest piece of clothing you have, still wear, and is not outdated?

Favorite oldie: nice purple dress still in my closet from about 15 years ago. Some day I'll fit back into it. This one doesn't fit all criteria.

I have many pairs of old shoes, still wear but "stylish" is questionable.

I tend to keep my jeans forever. It takes major holes for me to toss.

Last month I had a lizard in there, don't wear it but it was somewhat stylish. The cat brought it in and the poor thing hid in my closet until I could save it and let it outside.

I'm femme. This means that I really don't have any terribly old things in my closet. Especially not something outdated. That's anathama!

This is what is in my closet:

1) Not me! :lol::lol::lol::lol:

2)My formally oldest, not outdated piece would have been my 10 year old Italian leather strappy heels. Unfortunately, my cat desided he wanted to be Queen for the day and chewed them all to hell. I was really mad, but he didn't touch any other of my shoes, boots, or sandles. This act caused Ellie and I to contemplate weather our male cat really is a Queen. He chose the most fabulous pair, and the most expensive.

3) My next eldest thing in my closet, which I keep to remind me of the horror of a marriage I escaped, is my gray knee length A-line skirt. I wore it to every court date I had, I reserved it for just court actually. I would wear a sweater or whatever with it, but that is my court skirt. It's tucked in the back or the closet, where I was formally.

4) I have some older, about 5 years old BUM equipment tops and shorts, a few blouses that I have not worn in awhile and some older jeans. I attempt to stay currnet on fashions without being to fady. I think at 40 I am a bit old to try to look like I'm 20, in the micro mini or skin tight jeans and belly shirts. I am to look timeless at this point in my life. Plus I have kids to put through college so no more big shopping sprees for me!

One shirt that I've had since I was 8, still fits (well, it used to be huge, now it fits). I think it's cute, I got it at an aquarium, but it's so wore down that I don't wear it much. Now that you brought it up though, I'll have to pull it out. :)

Also I have another shirt that doesn't fit as well, but I still wear sometimes, that I got when I was 7. I loved baggy clothes when I was little... that's what happens when your favorite person is your brother that's 8 years older.

Everything else is relatively new (I shop at goodwill:p). I share a closet with my sister, so anything that doesn't get wore has to go!

I have shirts in my closet that I wear regularly that I still consider my new shirts. My mother bought them for me in 2001.

The boots I wear; purchased in 2002.

I have a gym sweatshirt in my drawer that I sometimes wear to the beach. It's from my senior year at college. I graduated in 1972.

Sometimes I'll be looking through old photos and find one of me wearing the exact shirt I have on looking at the photos. That's bad.

Maybe I need to go shopping.

I have an old Frock coat I took home from a halloween party in 1982. It had to be 30+ years old then. I went as Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics with a red crew cut and androgenous make-up. I was real close to looking exactly like her! I wore my Tux I wear for orchestra concerts. At the end of the party I did not find my tux jacket in the coat pile, but in its place was the old Tailcoat. "Cool!" I said and was happy with the unintentional swap by the other person.

I am happy to say that I still wear it twenty-six years later!!!

I have a read, white and blue sweater my mom sent to me when I was in the service. I've had it since 1972.

Funny you should bring this up! My kids just die when I come out wearing clothes I wore in High School. (I'm 43 now) I have been 6' since I was a freshman (I was only 90 lbs then---now i buy pants 2" bigger around and don't have to take them in just to keep them up!)

But I have so many shirts that I wore in HS and college. My family worked at Lands' End and their rugby shirts of the 80's just will not wear out. Neither will the sweaters.

When we travel the kids get t shirts to show where they were. The ongoing joke is that I don't need to buy any more because I still haven't worn out (or at least thrown away) the ones from 25 years ago.

And as for my tux...thank God they really don't go out of style. Yep, it is the one I wore as a Senior in HS. I also have 2 others I got in college.

I have sung for a group for the last 14 years. They have been together 26 years. We have to buy new suit coat about every 18 months....because they can't fit into their old ones. I have so many different colors of coats that still fit I have begun giving them to boys in the neighborhood to wear to Homecoming dances!!!

and yes, I only have 4 pair of shoes but I do replace them about once a year.

The biggest thing that takes up a lot of my colset is my tie collection. I have about 400 from HS on. many are outdated, but I have great memories of all of them. I have rarely paid more than $10 for any of them but have many many designer ones off sale racks and others I picked up in Europe. Someday I will make a great quilt out of them

So does that make me a tie king or queen???

Two things.

I have a suit that was owned by my uncle Paul. It's from the early 50's. My grandmother had it stored in a cedar chest and brought it out one day and gave it to me. It's made of a beige wool that has flecks of white and black in the fabric. I wear the coat and people ask me wear I bought it. The pants are high waisted and cuffed. Very cool. I've worn it now for what......20 years?

The other piece is a tux from the early 60's that I found in a second hand clothing store about 10 years ago. Very rat pack with a shawl collar. I love the thing. Wear it when I sing concerts. Used it for a headshot recently.

The label inside the jacket says After Six-Detroit.

Scotty! Love the man in the frock coat! Ooooh Baby!

I have a nice forest green Eddie Bauer sweater that I wear a lot. There are a couple of good quality white shirts that never go out of style. A nice black Van Huessen shirt that came from a thrift store. I also have a salmon colored Bill Blass shirt from the thrift store. My every day wear is golf shirts and sweat pants.

Ash, you look very dashing in the tails. It looks like you just came from the english hunt club.

To have a couple of sexy nighties and a pair of horsie Ariat boots in the same closet? Sometimes I'm Cinderella, and once in a while I'm Batman. Go figure.

Well nothing really over 3 years old. My wife stuck a leather jacket that belonged to her brother in there, and I am not sure why she did it or how old it is. If she is going to wear it, good luck. We have maybe 3 weeks of winter here in Southeast Texas....

I have a gray sweatshirt that is very comfortable that I wear in the fall and summertime. It is 15 years old now and was given to me by my oldest child. She bought it at the mall and had #1 dad put on it. How could I ever get rid of something like that?

Closet? Mine's locked shut with kite string and sealing wax, but I think those knee high, red go-go boots of my mom's I used to strut around in as a little kid are buried in there some where.

~now I'm wondering where my Lalapalooza T (1st and best show) got to...

I've been good...then GREAT!, then crappy, then confused, enlightened, crappy again, then great, mad, hung over, awed, scared, hungry, sandwich makey, baffled, fat, then pretty good again... (it's been awhile..) http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/spezial/Fool/au.gif

Thanks for saying so... hope I don't wear out the welcome to soon :)

For whatever reason, I find myself going through my clothes often, trying not to hold on to articles I don't wear much. I guess I need to do things like that to keep from pack-ratting, as I have a habitual problem with that--usually with receipts and paperwork I think I might need, but never do.

One thing that comes to mind is a black button down, french-cuffed shirt that I bought to go to my grandmother's funeral. I lost the cuff links that came with it, so I roll the sleeves up, and it's hard to keep unwrinkled. For whatever reason, that shirt has become a favorite of my wife's, and I think it will always be one of mine, even if I never wear it again. But I probably will ;)

As for shoes, I have a pair of black Sketchers that I can't seem to let go of. Damn things are hardly comfortable footwear, though, so I really try not to wear them.

Needless to say, my wardrobe is boring. Maybe if I had the guts to wear what I really liked, instead of trying to fit into socially accepted norms, I'd have nicer stuff. But the night is still young, so to speak.

I'm a pack rat. Save everything. Thank god my partner works for the Container Store. Those double hang closest racks come in handy.

I have 2 pairs of boots that I never wear.

1 pair of brown cowboy boots that I bought years ago. Never wear them as they make me feel too tall. Am 6'4, when I put those on I'm 6'6 and feel strange!

Also have a pair of English Riding boots that go all the way up to my knees. Bought them at a flea market years ago to go with a Renaisance Faire costume I had. Rarely wear them but being a pack rat, can't throw them away. You never know when you'll need some genuine English riding boots for a costume.

I'm not really a fashionable guy in fact I have a lot
of old stuff in my closet.
I'm into vintage, aside from the fact that you don't have to
spend more on your wardrobe you look fashionable
in the old school look.
I guess it's not the clothes but the attitude..you know what I mean.
Walk as if you're walking in a runway and do your cat walk lol.
