Is there not a passage in the OT where God explicitly gives some guy a second wife? I'm so rusty on the Bible at this point, that I fear I'll never find it on my own, and my interest in this verse relates to a writing project I'm working on. Much appreciate any help in pinpointing that verse if it exists.

Off the top of my head, I cannot remember God giving anyone a second wife. The only occurence I can think of that may come close is when God told Hosea to marry a prostitute called Gomer, so he could experience the pain God felt when His people, the Israelites, prostituted themselves to other gods.
I don't know if that is of any use?

The only story that comes to mind where God takes credit for giving wives is 2 Samuel 12. Specifically, in a tirade against David, God says:
8 I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added as much more.
I don't know if this is what you had in mind. Perhaps u-dog will remember a more appropriate story.

jacob, rachel, and leah? http://columns.crossmap.com/article/a-tale-of-two-sisters-rachel-and-leah/steven-wickstrom/301.htm
not exactly given by God, but the story doesn't seem to indicate that God was upset that bigamy was taking place.

That and Jacob/Rachel/Leah are the only two I can think of.

I would like to be some help, but the only verse I could think of was the one Andy mentioned in 2nd Samuel. I can't recall many instances where God chose mates for anybody.
And no need to thank me for all this valuable information, none at all. I was glad to do it. ;)

This isn't exactly saying that God of the Bible gave anybody two wives but it suggests that it's perfectly fine to have two wives:
Deuteronomy 21:15-17 (King James Version)
15If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated:
16Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn:
17But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.
Since God wrote the Bible as the fundamentalists believe, then it's ok by him if somebody hath two wives. So the Southern Baptists who keep hollering against bigamy might need to actually open up and read that thing they keep hitting people on the head with.

In certain mythology Lilith comes before Eve. But that may not qualify as concurrent wives.
