I just started at the CC this week, so far I like it, not that you can tell after 3 days. How many others here are in college or high school or something? When did you go back? How's it going?

I'm in college; I go to Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA. My classes started up three weeks ago (August 31). Its going well so far, I really enjoy my classes. But I miss my family and friends back home : (

If you enjoy the classes and everything that's a good start. It takes a little while to get to know people, and I'm sure you'll be even happier there once you do. How far away does your family live?

Make it a positive one. Find/create your circle(s) of friends. Yes, you will probably gain more from those all-night bull sessions as you do in classes, but everything in moderation. All-women housing lends itself to that, but there are many other venues and opportunities.

Thanks BC, it's going to be an interesting couple years. You never know what life is going to throw at you. School is a positive thing so far and I hope that I can keep it that way. I missed being in a class setting, so I really enjoy having people around again. I feel ready for this new adventure. :p

Luckily my family lives very close, only about 45 minutes away. :) But some days even that small distance feels unbearable just because of the nature of things. Its a wonderful school and I love it here,but they're completely against anything relating to homosexuality, so I can't be very open here. Which, usually I can deal with...but some days it just gets so upsetting, and thats when I really miss my family. :( But thats one of the things I love about Soulforce...anytime I'm feeling down and pretty awful about myself I can come here and find some of the support I need.

Even with a wonderful group of people, it is very challenging to be in an environment where you are not accepted as for who you are. I have only experienced it on the most minimal level, but I feel like I can relate.

On those hard days, family and true friends will save you.

It sound like you like the school over-all though, which is great! Try to remain optimistic. :)

My education experience has been different than that of many. I went to a Catholic college in Iowa right out of high school, dropped out within a semester. At 22, I enrolled in community college--one of the best experiences of my life, and graduated with a General Education degree. Then I puttered around, and returned to pursue my B.A. at 27, and will be done this December.

I feel kind of odd being around so many younger people, and at a Christian college on top of it, which adds the additional barrier of faith/beliefs/values. The theological department has been underwhelming for the most part, the typical homophobic foolishness we're used to, but the English department, my advisor in particular, has been great, and he knows I'm gay.

For my English colloquium portfolio, I'm including a number of writings that deal with LGBT issues. My independent project is a letter to Matthew Shepard, and I'm very proud of it, although some changes must be made.

College is stressful. There's the issue of money, the pressure to keep up grades, loads of reading, papers to write, and so forth. The job prospects once I'm all done worry me. Yet, I'm glad I pursued my education.

My next move? Grad school. :rolleyes: I intend to get a M.A. in English with an emphasis on LGBT and Pagan literature. How's that for a unique area of study?

Do a google search. From what research I've done, there are a number of universities that offer B.A.'s in both. Unfortunately, not a lot of colleges offer M.A.'s or doctorates in LGBT studies, I'm not sure about women's studies.

I will be studying for my master's in the future. Adult education, childhood education, creative writing and gender studies are what I'm considering.

Turquoise, Rutgers University, the University of Chicago, and Stanford University are a few that I can think of off the top of my head.

Okay, so I am a little late on this one... haven't been on the boards too often lately.

I will probably be starting some online classes once I get my courage up.lol I started college right out of high school, and it didn't work out too well. There were too many issues that distracted me, and my grades weren't so encouraging. That next summer I did much better, but then that fall I had some trouble. So now I have a sort of hesitation when it comes to submitting to the stresses of course work. I tell you, I am a hodgepodge of contrasts. I should probably be seeing a therapist :p
