I don't think that a Uganda type anti-gay bill would have much support here in the US at this point in time.

Doesn't mean people wouldn't try: we've got beauty queens AND Tony Perkins calling for execution of gay folks.

I don't like to think that it can get that ugly in our government, but it's DEFINITELY that ugly among some of the people in this country.

While I personally doubt it would go as far here as it has in Uganda, I definitely am concerned about the backwards turn civil rights could take. When I see people like Sarah Palin garnering popularity and Scott Brown getting elected in a traditionally democratic state, and then Obama's ratings drop..... I shudder inside. Here in NH people are trying to get gay marriage overturned, and it's one of the most liberal places in the United States.

I think, though, that our situation is different. In Uganda, in most African countries, homosexuality is extremely stigmatized and as a result there is very little common knowledge about it. Those who do (or would, if they allowed themselves to consider it) identify as LGBT keep it to themselves, so there are a lot of people to whom LGBT people are strange unknowns.

Keep in mind that before the revolution, Iran had some of the most progressive attitudes and laws regarding women, and it changed as quickly as the group in power. I don't think you're paranoid, but I desperately hope that all the people who know and love me as and know and accept me as a gay person, would not flip-flop as easily as the politicians in power.

Which is to say, I understand your concern and feel it myself. I hope our fears are unfounded.

That's just the thing, isn't it? We don't know when, or if at all, the struggle for equality will end. We have a liberal president who I adore but won't even marry us, and at any moment some psycho like Gallagher can do a power grab and - - like what happened in Virginia - -undo everything the LGBT society has worked for.

Sigh, I shouldn't think too much when I'm single. It gets depressing.

Now's the time not to wilt. Now's the time to be on the offensive. Yeah, it's tough but they expect us to fold at any sign of pressure.
