From the Advocate:

Anita Bryant is Back, Hosting Antigay Rally

Former orange juice spokeswoman Anita Bryant has largely dropped out of sight since campaigning against gay rights in the 1970s, but the singer-antigay activist returns to the stage in Okahoma City Friday night for the Reclaiming America for Christ rally.

Up until this past winter, I'd only known about Anita Bryant from the Leslie Neilson comment in Airplane! where he says, "I haven't seen anything like this since the Anita Bryant concert." This last winter, I saw the movie Milk, and that explained everything.

But Milk's message has had a greater reach. We've already won. There is no going back.

"Squeeze a fruit, for Anita!"

And if you're lucky, he just might squeeze you back.

Well, before watching Milk, I never knew anything about Anita Bryant other than the line in Airplane!

Anita was the first to begin a national campaign against LGBT equality. She frequently referred to gays and lesbians as "human garbage." The national gay community was shocked and angry. Our battle cry was "Out of the closet and into the streets!"

Here it is 33 years later and I still won't drink Florida orange juice.

Wow I didn't even know she was still alive.

If you go to songmeanings.net and look up lyrics for David Allan Coe you can find one of his songs about her. I think the song is called "Anita Bryant Leave the Queers Alone" or something like that. I think it's funny. A warning though....for those of y'all who don't know him..... David Allan Coe is very not-pc.

Several months ago, I wrote a letter and mailed it to Ms. Bryant's ridiculous ministry. In the letter, I told her that she's wasting her time with her anti-gay campaign. She'll never succede in eliminating the LGBT community, and she should instead be trying to score another hit record. I bet it went through the shredder, just like my Focus on the Family letters.

I remember this all too well. To call someone "human garbage" sure isn't Christian which Ms. Bryant professes to be. I wasn't out back then but the case resonated with me because of the vehemence on both sides. Now I understand what was at stake. We've made many strides and work still has to be done.

Agreed, Gennee. And, that incident with the pie-in-her-face may have been just as milietent, but it made a point.
