Whenever I hear the word sinister, an image comes to mind of an evil, greedy, villain with plans to hold the world's population hostage so he can take over all governments and rule the earth. I think of the fictional evil characters in the Batman or Spiderman movies and images of good people screaming and running in the streets.

But lately I see the word "sinister" describing the intentions of LGBT people in America as if we have our own evil plan to rule the world. The word "sinister" is used to demonize us as a wicked enemy to be fought and defeated. Here are some quotes I found that use the adjective "sinister" when describing gays:

"Homosexuality is one of the more heinous fruits of the law of sin. It's extreme heinousness is indicated through the death sentence God requires for it through its most sinister and deceptive ability to justify and establish itself as if it were legitimate."

Against Homosexuality - Robert T. Lee 1998

"Sad to say, one by one, even the most conservative crowd in the media are caving into the homosexual's sinister plan."

Stephen Bennet - The Gay Spin Zone 2002

"Don't be decieved by images of smiling homosexual couples being touted as the face of 'gay' America. That will not be revealed as the sinister side - the activists' desire to silence any and all criticism of homosexuality."

Kelly Boggs, Baptist Press, Southern Baptist Convention 2004

"They have conducted a relentless propaganda campaign.....called education, eradicating prejudice, and consciousness-raising. They coin new-fangled words like homophobia to stigmatize deep-seated popular attitudes, they publicize and memoralize minor local incidents, like vicious murders of homosexuals, making them symbols of moral attitudes they want to condemn. And in today's America, many are dangerously passive, hardly aware of the sinister conditioning they and their children are being subjected to."

The Real Meaning of Gay Rights - Joseph Sobran 2002

"I believe the agenda behind it is sinister."

James Dobson of Focus on the Family when commenting on SpongeBob SquarePants and other cartoon characters that he believes leads children to think homosexuality is acceptable - 2004

"Anyone who doubts that the governor's relentless push for gay rights is motivated by elite special interest from outside our state should visit the website of Educational International. They will see representatives from around the world holding up a rainbow flag, the symbol of the homosexual rights movement, and denouncing 'homophobia'. Worst of all perhaps, is that the Maine Education Association promotes a hidden agenda among young people who have no understanding of the sinister goals of the leaders of the organizations, and no power to resist their efforts at indoctrination."

The Record Online Newspaper, The Christian Civic League of Maine 2005

"There has been a sinister movement underfoot to put into effect a state-wide program in West Virginia public schools that would indoctrinate our children to except homosexuality under the banner of 'civil rights', 'tolerance', and 'anti-bullying."

Straight and Narrow, West Virginia Christian 2002

"Homosexuals and their sinister, evil agenda are as dangerous to America as are the murdering muslims."

Jesse Housman, Free Republic blog 2004

"The homosexual ideology threatens the very basis of human society. The sinister and successful efforts are to corrupt children by presenting unatural sex as if it were natural, and in the process conveying a distorted notion of the role of sex in human life."

Apostolate to the Homosexual, Ralph McInerny 2001

Now that you have provided us with a pretty inclusive list, Rick, it is a lot unnerving to me how frequently that word has been used, over the last four years or so and beyond. It must be a way, through language, to equate not just our behavior, but our identity and being with us being evil to the core in some way. Language is such a powerful tool, for the bad and the good. What caring, concerned parent wouldn't want their child as far away from a "sinister" person as possible (or a homosexual as is stated here) after reading some of these statements? It is one more glaring example of how many of the things that we try to express and stand for get diminished down into a mere sound byte. Sad, but true. Vanessa

Sometimes I wonder if these people see simple dissent as sinister.
