Some of my ancestors were UEL ( United Empire Loyalists ) who fled New England and moved to the Eastern townships. Granby is such a city - as in Acton Vale, QC - WASP enclaves in Francophonne Canada. It is where my mother and I were born and the latter is where my grandparents were born and married.
History suggests that the American Revolution was the first successful revolution staged by and for the privileged colonial classes. The "log cabin" illusion dates later ...and erroneously, but successfully, to Andrew Jackson, a plantation scion. The USA has always been comfortable with the absence and presence of wealth and power in their socio-economic division.
The middle class was created in two steps, by two branches of the patrician Knickerbocker high society Roosevelt family. Each had a different religious denomination and a different political affiliation. The neice of the 26th Republican president became the wife of the 32nd Democrat president. In creating a viable middle class, he both saved his social class from a socialist revolution, and simultaneously, " traitored his own class."
Morality has always been a subjective definition. From the beginning of any European colonial effort, the Savages or Aboriginals did not deserve Christian moral justice in treaties and agreements. These mammals had no souls. Divine right or Manifest Destiny - at all and any costs. African-descended slaves from the Sub-Sahara were often sold into slavery by their own tribesmen. Although we owe "AMAZING GRACE" to a slaver-turned-priest, the majority were not flocking to be priested in the Church of England after years of transporting millions of slaves to North America.
The Second Gilded Age is in full swing, with a global twist not envisioned by the Dollar Diplomats who provided the US with their overseas possessions. It is now economic rather than political colonialism....at least the illusion of a lack of the former. Puppet leaders and governments are accepted as normative by the sheeple who listen to talkingheads owned and created by the billionaire oligarchal class. This time, there are no " traitors to their class". This time, there will be no bailout for the masses. They have changed the pricing dynamics of the LEI's, and they have changed bankruptcy laws to conform to the Norquist view of the social compact...able to be drowned in a bathtub.
The Gilded Class understand minorities, and their penchant to divide and their inability to coalesce. They must exploit this. They are so few, and we are so many. The illusion of their power rests with our belief that we possess none. Like Caesar with their Praetorian Guard, they have assured themselves that the fear of a conscription from the masses is dangerous.
Yes, there have been changes to the fortunes of many minorities in the USA, but never, and I mean never, when those minorities did not identify a cataclysmic event from which a gentrified and calculated response in its entirety was called for. Rather, they acted like all oppressed minorities without any further recourse but action.
Nonviolence is not always a theoretical exercise without the reality of violence to its participants....physical or emotional or both. Non violent protest has meant dogs, hoses, lynchings, yes blood, gore and death because they believed that old classic conservative when he said......I paraphrase...
" Moderation in the pursuit of freedom is no virtue, and extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice.." ( Maj. Gen. Barry Goldwater, AFRes believed that LGBT Americans should serve in the military openly....he was not a theocon...in fact, he despised their hijacking of his political party.)
Did I use the word "believed" - no, it goes beyond a mere belief, it is fire in the belly and an awakened soul that does not compromise with evil.
