Political Director

The Texas Freedom Network, www.tfn.org, a statewide, non-profit organization located in Austin, seeks a full time Political Director. The Texas Freedom Network advances the mainstream agenda of religious freedom and individual liberties to counter the radical right. The Political Director is responsible for working collaboratively with the Executive Director to establish and implement legislative, public policy and electoral programs designed to achieve the political goals of the organization.


RESPONSIBILITIES
• Direct TFN’s legislative and State Board of Education strategy, including direct and grassroots lobbying, legislative training, legislative and policy analysis, monitoring legislative and SBOE meetings and hearings and conducting policy briefings.
• Recruit, manage and direct legislative and political interns.
• Work collaboratively with the Outreach and Faith Network staff to create and implement issue advocacy campaigns.
• Act as liaison and engage advocacy with elected officials and state and federal agencies on issues pertinent to the goals of TFN
• Work with Communications staff to direct political research.
• Direct TFN opposition research. Review the radical right's e-mails, mailings, and alerts. Act as TFN expert on political activity of the radical right.
• Direct research on political candidates, including SBOE, Texas Legislature and statewide officeholders. Direct research on radical-right PACs and funding of political candidates.
• Work collaboratively with Executive Director and other staff to develop and implement all TFN electoral strategies and tactics, including member communications, endorsements, press and PAC activities.

All staff assists in general office responsibilities, including correspondence, data entry, answering phones and working with volunteers. Travel and working long and/or irregular hours are required.


QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors degree in political science, government or related field. Minimum of 3-5 years experience directing legislative, public policy and/or political strategy. Minimum 3-5 years experience in public policy analysis. An articulated belief in TFN’s mission. Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, including demonstrated experience in directing political or public policy research and public speaking experience to a variety of audiences. Experience managing others. Applicants must be personable, well-organized, resourceful, persistant and possess a sense of humor. Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.


SALARY
$45K + Commensurate with experience. Benefits include health and dental insurance and generous paid vacation.
