View Full Version : Connect The Dots And You See The Strategy

The American theocon leadership, and by extension their Canadian cohorts, have succeeded in first creating "think tanks" , accredited universities with law schools, and successfully have created alternative associations to PFLAG as in PFOX and have created a faux-scientific organisation called Exodus and their malevolent use of the word Love as in Love Won Out. Men in the psychiatric and other clinical fields with theocon views have been expelled from their national professional associations and are touted as experts on the "homosexual agenda and aberrant lifestyle"

As previously stated in other postings, it is clear that the theocons have a stranglehold on Congress, the Judiciary, and the major Christian denominations. In addition, they have used the paedophile scandals to become more aggressive in their efforts to convert Catholics to their definition of Christianity. In fact, the Roman Catholic sexual theological position has changed from the psychosexual state being morally neutral and the behaviour sinful...to the Dominionist position that the state and behaviour is a chosen sinful lifestyle in addition to being disordered.

Tonight, we focus upon Arlene Isaacson, our chief lobbyist for the MA Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, one of the most competent lobbyists in any state, with a track record that makes her principally responsible for the 2004 legislative victories following the many attempts by theocons to stop May 17, 2004 from starting at all.

She was effective in stopping the morphing to civil unions. Tonight, she was successful in convincing the Constitutional Convention to adjourn until November 9, 2006, two days after the biennial elections. It is again to make sure that the almost sure number of 50 votes does not succeed.

Most legislators knew that this flawed and allegedly fraudulent petition was an end run against legislative prerogative and part of the neocon dirty tricks so identified with the extreme right in the USA.

I also see their strategy when they make gentrified activists in the LGBT community, when told that by the equal branch of the judiciary that they have a rightful claim to marriage, opt for civil unions as the easiest way to proceed. Then, when they want marriage, this is the judiciary response in Hartford, CT today.

FROM THE HARTFORD COURANT TODAY: ( ) CT/NY ARE NEIGHBOURS.

"Civil union and marriage in Connecticut now share the same benefits, protections and responsibilities under law," Judge Patty Jenkins Pittman in New Haven wrote. "The Connecticut Constitution requires that there be equal protection and due process of law, not that there be equivalent nomenclature for such protection and process."

AS I WAS PREVIOUSLY ASKED, WHY IS SETTLING FOR CIVIL UNIONS IN THE USA A RECIPE FOR NEVER RECEIVING FULL MARRIAGE RIGHTS UNDER THAT NAME AND EQUAL SOCIETAL APPROBATION. NOW YOU HAVE THE VERBAGE THAT THIS PATTY JENKINS PITTMAN - A CONSERVATIVE PROVIDED YOU WITH TODAY. IT WILL BE REPLICATED WHEN THE VT CASE IS SETTLED.

"When queried about the claim made by the LGBT community that Same-Sex Marriage and Rights is the Civil Rights issue, a leading anti-gay Protestant Christian leader ( Hispanic and chosen for that purpose ) indicated that it was not a civil rights issue, because homosexuality is a matter of choice." If not, ask the ex-gays and ex-lesbians he works with."

Now, here is what I believe can be helpful in MA.

1) Pray for the success of the outcome, whether it is an end to the question in 2006 or a referendum of the majority on oppressing a minority in 2008. We are first and foremost men and women who are led to political activism with the prism of our own spirituality, and our own faith systems, whether in the Abrahamic traditions or other humanistic societies.

2) Have LGBT spiritual leaders (Soulforce and MCC, UCC, UU, and other groups) hold a conference to coalesce all the LGBT groups - some whose behaviours have antagonised each other and has been fodder for the theocons. The activists in turn, should create a common strategy to offset the thousands of national volunteers and huge contributions of resources that the Neocons have invested in this fight to end marriage in the USA by state forever, and then to tackle the FMA in the US Constitution.

3) Hold focus groups throughout the state from the lower cape in Provincetown to the RI border in Bellingham and Blackstone; to the west in cities like Springfield, or to the CT border and the NY border in Danbury. At this point, each side, we and they, have many undecided individuals. The vote was 100 for postponement (LGBT) and 91 for the vote today (THEOCONS) That means that 9 delegates abstained from the 200 member legislature sitting as a constitutional convention.

There are 150 state representatives and 100 state senators. After all, when all is said and done, it is about the courage of 151 delegates to frustrate a vote by a majority intent on denying the civil rights of an oppressed minority by one vote less than the 50 votes they require to go to the voters.

4) Invite, as part of the strategic plan, a group of youth nationwide activists who understand that what happens in MA will affect the national results for their lifetime, and they want to take part in the national debate being held in microcosm in the bosom of the American Revolutionary experience. I would predict that whatever national strategy, that they choose the City of Lexington, MA. where the first shot was fired to win your freedom from the British Crown. Your tactics are as revolutionary as your ancestors, for this time, your guerilla tactic is non-violent activism.

5) Gay-affirming pastors should preach on the merits of marriage to monogamous gay couples who are being shyed away from the altar because they fear it will be revoked or reduced. There have been 8000 weddings in two years. Imagine if this time, instead of a mass extralegal commitment ceremony with hundreds of couples, it was also and simultaneously a legal marriage event. Imagine the doubling of those numbers in a series of marriage ceremonies between now and the resumption of the convention. This is not meant to propose a stunt or contrived marriages, but convincing at least 8000 more committed monogamous partners to tie the knot. Besides, in their ultimate malevolence in denying gay marriage if they win a vote in 2008, they grandfather claused all existing marriages until they could create a strategy to revoke those as well.

These are the ideas that Crozier spoke to me about as we three shared dinner and he gallantly sipped some consomme and despite obvious pain, had loud and laughing quality play time together with our son. I am, after 31 years still passionately and deeply in love with him. James, we will talk about it, and of course, we thank you for your considerate offer.

This is an important discussion IMHO, and we hope to receive replies from many familiar and maybe new quarters.

The GLAD legal team won the initial Supreme Judicial ruling on Goodridge in November of 2003, with the requirement that marriage equality begin on May 17, 2004. GLAD along with other groups, principally MA Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus and Massachusetts Equality providing that needed support.

However, GLAD was unsuccessful in overturning Romney's malevolent use of an archaic and arcane law created in 1913 to support the interracial heterosexual ban against marriage. In other words, interracial heterosexual couples from the Deep South could not come to MA to receive a valid marriage licence. This law should have been repealed at least in 1967, when Loving v Virginia was decided. Many laws are not repealed, just no longer used. GLAD petitioned against its usage, and the villified, threatened with impeachment, etc....liberal justices voted with the theocons on this issue.

Next, GLAD was unsuccessful in showing that the Petition Drive was an end run on Goodridge with a fig leaf arguement that it was merely a Constitutional amendment change. Three former attorneys general of MA agreed with GLAD. One was a Republican as well. The attorney general is a conservative Catholic Democrat with gubernatorial ambitions. He certified the petition and when proven incidents of fraud and dirty tricks emerged, he did nothing to stop it. Again the liberal justices voted with the theocons on this issue. This meant that the Constitutional Convention would add this certified petition on the agenda.

To be fair, there is another GLAD suit to allow RI residents to marry in MA because RI does not have a DOMA law ......yet, but the theocon Republicans are encouraged by the MA judicial decisions, the NY decision, and now the CT decision stating that civil unions equal marriage. In fact, one could argue that the CT decision is our Plessy v Ferguson of separate but equal. If you want the Brown v Board of Education of Topeka KS , then you cannot compromise with civil unions thinking that it can morph up to marriage.

Of all the list of GLAD losses, the CT decision may become the most egregious in time. You can be sure that these decisions make Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and Mitt Romney and both sides in NY content with the outcome for their own political ambitions.

The Plessy decision in the late 1890's provided political and moral cover to the racists and bigots as well as those who sought a solution about separate but equal definitions, rights and privileges for blacks. It meant that the Democrats could accept a racist wing of their party for reasons of power and the Republicans could now write off their southern wing and the blacks while retaining the illusion of an existing party. In fact, there was until the Civil Rights Act, a Democrat-Dixiecrat hegemony. The racists merely took over the shell of the Republican Party and it became the Party of Jefferson Davis instead of Abraham Lincoln.

As Canadians, even working abroad in the USA, we are aware that we have our own theocons to concern ourselves with. Most of them are under the tutelage and financial support of American theocons. Falwell, Robertson and Dobson long ago established their own "ministries" in our country. We share the pain, even if their influence is severely limited by our culture of diversity.

I've just been thinking the last two days that our organizations and our people--including those of us here--should gather in very public conferences, conventions or whatnot...call for papers, nation-wide--international even...present, perform, network, round-table, debate, brainstorm, get publicity. There are a large number of gay and gay-affirming bloggers, groups and personalities that could be drawn upon to create a series of conferences.

Well, whaddaya know? Hmmm... Just saw this. Here's something going on right under my nose:

The First Annual Progressive Faith Blog Con: (http://progressivefaithblogcon.com/)
When: Friday, July 14 - Sunday, July 16
Where: The Montclair State University Conference Center.

Faith and politics have the capacity to profoundly divide, or to profoundly connect. The first annual Progressive Faith Blog Con is a chance for progressive bloggers of faith to meet one another, talk with one another, and learn from one another.

Our progressive politics are rooted in our theologies, and our theological stances inform our politics; why not celebrate them together? During this weekend gathering we'll break bread together, talk about the subjects that fire our passions, and put faces with the names on our blogrolls.

During the first annual Progressive Faith Blog Con we'll talk about the intersection of religion and politics; the roots and branches of our faith traditions; ecumenical and interfaith blogging engagement; and the challenges and blesssings of pluralism. We'll have breakout sessions around faith-tradition, and around meditation, liturgy, and scripture. We'll talk about justice and poverty, about progressive faith activism, and about the religious right. The conference will be led by and for our community, and it will be shaped by each of us who attends. Join us for a weekend of learning, connection, and conversation!
