O'Reilly and the Fox "Crime Expert" were being incredibly sly. It has been reported by a reliable authority that their are 150 total gangs of all types in the D.C. area. Going back and listening carefully to O'Reilly's report you find that no one ever actually says "150 lesbian gangs." They discuss "lesbian gangs" in one sentence, refer to 150 gangs in the D.C. area in another sentence, and then return to discussing "lesbian gangs."

Same thing with the way they string together several isolated incidents and then make a statement about there being "a nation-wide network" implying that this is a criminal conspiracy of national scope--something they never really spell out--they implied it, but they can deny they said it if ever pinned down.

I suspect that, if pinned down, they would deny ever asserting that there are 150 "lesbian gangs" in the D.C. area. I know a right-wing hate-monger who justifies this kind of thing as "spin" and says everyone does it. Somehow you can get away with lying when you call it "spin."

Seems like folks like O'Reilly wouldn't know the truth if it bit them______you know where.

I don't like to frame our struggle as a "culture war"--that's a term that comes from the right wing. "War" implies that the Christian Right is defending itself against an aggressive "enemy." "Lying" and all sorts of "collateral damage" is justifiable when one is defending oneself in a "war" agains an "enemy."

We need to get beyond the "war" frame and start insisting that everyone behave like we're living in a civil society, not a battlefield.
