As an adjunct professor- I am hired by contract- as long as I show up and do not sacrifice chickens in class I'm cool with them.

With my church job- that is more difficult. The senior pastor, who is an intern, is rather helpful and knowledgeable about church situations. The weird thing is that he is usually at church in the mornings and evenings and I tend to be at church in the afternoons, so we do not see each other that much. But the relationship is good. However, I also have the other church boss of the whole church. That is a more difficult line to walk, especially when I preach. For example, my last preaching effort in front of the whole church I brought up some ethical/political issues. Some liked what I said some did not- I was, however, quite nervous about this because a negative reaction could equal work issues. However, the church as a whole was supportive of my sermon even if they did not agree with everything I said. In general, the church has been rather supportive of me.
