My boyfriend lives not too far from you outside of Spartanburg. I would tell you all the wonderful things he has found in upper South Carolina, but he likewise has gotten fed up with the area. He is in the process of taking care of financial things and planning a move out to the sticks of Colorado. (We may be in the sticks here, but we are not in the Bible Belt.  )
He also is weary of the fundamentalist attitude of the Bible Belt. He has found a welcome acceptance in church, but says the Episcopal church is sort of considered a "black sheep" in the area.
Wish I had a suggestion or two.
