Awesome article. This study was mentioned on The Colbert Report the other day. (Colbert, BTW, is great at making fun of homophobes.)

One of the arguments against lesbian couples having kids is that the kids will be stigmatized. I bet the same argument was made thirty years ago about single women who kept their babies. Eventually, the stigma lessens.

I'm old enough to remember when it was controversal for mothers to work in jobs outside of the home. The perception was that kids of "working mothers" would be "problem children". Oh, yeah - and children of separated/divorced parents were all "problem children" too.

Concerned Women For America say the study defies common sense. I guess that kind of figures. Christian conservatives tend to see their ideology as common sense, conventional wisdom, mainstream, etc.

I've read a lot of stuff about how men and women tick differently. For example, women are supposed to operate more co-operatively while men tend to be more competitive and confrontational. That may be one reason kids with lesbian parents do better.

I'd be interested in finding how kids with gay male parents do. My experience with gay men is that a lot of them don't carry around the macho baggage that many straight men do.

BTW, last summer I was talking to a lesbian over beer at the gay club and she told us about how she lost custody of her kids when she and her husband divorced. She told her lawyer up front that she was a lesbian. She found out later that the guy was an evangelical Christian who didn't bother to declare his "conflict of interest" to her, and he basically sold her out. She complained to the Law Society, but didn't get anywhere.
