Default Mexico City legalizes gay civil unions

I just read in the Houston Chronicle that despite protests from the Catholic church that Mexico City has legalized gay civil unions. Not marriage, but a step in the right direction as I see it. Now the US has Canada to the north and Mexico to the south with fair minded governments who may not sanction marriage per se (Mexico) but at least allow gay people to have civil rights and protection under the law.

I know civil unions are not equal, but it is better than nothing at all. And if they have civil unions now, maybe it will open the door for marriage for gays in the future. We have to take what we can get. I want marriage, but I would take a civil union if it meant I could put my wife on my insurance and I would get to make decisions for her if she were incapacitated and a host of other decisions and protections afforded to married people, not the least of which is income tax. At any rate, I applaud Mexico City and its step in the right direction.
