Default LGBT Adoption Ban in OH?

The OH House of Rep.'s has just put through a bill to propose banning adoption rights and parental rights in a dispute (i.e. divorce) for LGBT individuals and couples. OH has already passed an anti-marriage amendment, and this is now what representatives are proposing. Despite the continued evidence supporting LGBT adoptions, prejudice is clouding people's minds. I request for prayer & support in preventing the state from banning LGBT civil rights even further.

Let us know if we can help concretely in any way too.

Is this proposition via the legislature? Or a ballot initiative?

Seems timely that you should mention this now, since, and this is irrelevent but I felt like sharing, we're debating gay adoption in my French conversation class. I was supposed to be there right now, but I am home sick. Paying attention to the kids arguing against it, it seems they don't have a logical argument to stand on, so how are entire states justifying such a ban? Seems clear that the real loss is suffered by the children who need loving homes and stand to be deprived of them if a ridiculous piece of legislation like this gets passed. Years ago when I lived in TX this issue came up. I sent a hand-written letter to the governor asking him to change his position. HAHAHAHA! As IF George W was going to do that. To this date, I wonder if he ever even saw or touched that letter I wrote to him 7 years ago.

Possibly legislative, but the previous anti-gay marriage amendment was done by ballot...

Thank you, as always, Zerbie. ((Hugs))

Default d'oh!

Zerbie has a blonde moment - you told us the OH House was initiating this adoption ban through the legislature and I missed it! Thanks for responding anyway, heheh! Hugs right back atcha, Sol!!!!!

I assume Equality OH has a significant membership base to alert and have them all contact state reps to oppose the thing. And we forumites could all personally contact people we know to put the alert out to our friends, families, and allies in OH to have them contact their reps, also. Let us know when this thing hits a committee hearing and we'll jump. At least, I will put notice out there to my friends and ask them to contact friends in OH.

Theoretically, I find the events in OH interesting b/c I'm fairly certain the marriage amendment passed there contains almost exactly the same wording as the proposed amendment we are fighing in AZ. Therefore, whatever spinoffs and Next Steps the anti-gays take in OH are a basis for us to speculate about what could happen here if the amendment were to pass here as well. Like, first they banned marriage and rolled back partner benefits, next comes a battle over domestic violence protections, then a battle for adoption rights. . .and so on. I think there's hardly any question that winning marriage bans emboldens them to come after *even more* basic things, like taking away rights and protections we may ACTUALLY have already, (although in some cases, we don't even have basic protections, depending upon your state and municipality).

Hmm - looks like I'm rambling incoherently now. Better get back to bed and sleep off this fever before I stop making any sense at all. Hey guys - look at the psychedlic pink elephant trumpeting through my room! Oh, hey, wait-a-minute!!!

Default Hmmm

Hmmm. Ohio & Florida. What do these two state have in common? Hmmm. Corrupted votes? Who's to say? Most of our populus doesn't remember 2004 , much less 2000. We have to keep fighting, but we DO deserve the hand we allowed. It's pathetic.

Remind me never to populate or give money through tourism to Ohio.

I read that the measure got killed. If I recall correctly a republican representative called it too divisive! This is certainly better news than I had hoped. Though I hear the bill's sponsor plans to keep bringing it back. What a mess.
