Matt,
Actually, the United Methodist Church got ruled against in a property case in California not very long ago. An anti-LGBT local Methodist Church got away with the property! Believe it or not! But there were some very technical legal reasons why it worked for that particular congregation and it won't work for every break away congregation.
In Virginia a lower court has approved the break-away so-called Anglicans taking property with them--it has to do with peculiarities of Virginia law going back to the schisms that occurred before the Civil War. That case is being appealed to a higher court.
