CHICAGO , IL-- U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) today released the following statement to commemorate Pride Month.

"Pride Month is a reminder that while we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do."

"Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It's about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect."

"It's time to turn the page on the bitterness and bigotry that fill so much of today's LGBT rights debate. The rights of all Americans should be protected -- whether it's at work or anyplace else. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" needs to be repealed because patriotism and a sense of duty should be the key tests for military service, not sexual orientation. Civil unions should give gay couples full rights. And those who commit hate crimes should be punished no matter whether those crimes are committed on account of race, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation."

I agree with the don't ask don't tell, thing. It has no legitimate basis, and no religous conflict over its implication. I guess it was originally implimentd on the premise that knowing promoted disorder, but people need to get over that.

I don't know much about Obama. Isn't he Muslim? If he is, then he must not be a practicing Muslim, because the more conservative ones would issue a death threat against him for supporting gay rights.At any rate, I want to know what kind of person he is, can he be trusted to stick by us or once he wins will he bow to political pressure and abandon us like Clinton did.

Obama is United Church of Christ ... yes, his name sounds Muslim, but he is not.

There is only one Muslim in the US Congress, Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota.

If you go to Snopes.com and search for "Obama" you get an article refuting claims likely made by conservative religious right wingers charging Obama with all sorts of false allegations (such as being Muslim). With no basis to support its allegations, the email that has spread through this country appears to be an attemp to discredit Obama and I'm sure will be joined if not already by others against the Democratic candidates.

Anyways, my point is that you'll find out some facts about Obama as well in the Snopes article. Which are based on verifiable facts.

Yeah, his name is actually Kenyan. His pops was from Kenya his mom from Hawai'i. He was born in Hawai'i. Yeah. He rocks. Except I don't like civil unions, I like marriages, but that's another thread.

Wow, if Obama is UCC, then he must be gay friendly. Right wingers can kiss my _______. I will vote for him if he wins the nomination, provided he is up and up on every other issue.

I want marriage too, Greg, but will take civil unions if that is what it comes down to. At least civil unions is better than nothing at all. If that is the compromise, it will have to do for now, until later generations see the nonsense going on today about it and just vote it into the Constitution, which it is guaranteed outright anyway, but so is the premise that all men are created equal and it took a Civil War and 100 years for the US to catch up with what that premise actually means. So, in the meantime, if we get civil unions, hey, it is better than what we have here in the state of Texas which is nothing.

I like Barack Obama a lot...there is an internet hoax being sent around (my mother's Sunday School teacher sent it to her!) saying that Barack is a secret jihadist Muslim and that Osama bin Laden wants him to be president of the US. A lot of idiots will believe this but it is not true, he is UCC, and his faith is real and his views are unspoiled because he is new

I am disgusted that he has taken money from the Israeli lobbyists and supports Israel's unilateral rights in the West Bank. This is at odds with the UCC position on Palestinians & the West Bank.

This is truly the most difficult issue in the world today and so many other issues hang on it...see my blogspot for more of my not so humble opinion!
